Review of Literature on Measurements of Non-invasive Break Up Times, Lipid Morphology and Tear Meniscal Height Using Commercially Available Hand-held Instruments

Abstract: Imaging algorithms in portable tearfilm instruments should be further standardized to facilitate wider adoption and evaluation. In the next few years, new emerging technologies will employ a strategy of non-invasive tear testing that is portable and relatively inexpensive, and these will enhance adoption of such tools in the clinic.

“…Likewise, most studies included in this systematic review diagnosed DED on the basis of tear break-up time, corneal fluorescein staining score and subjective self-reported symptoms. Due to the inherently large inter-and intra-observer differences associated with such assays, an objective measurement scale is needed [45,46]. Furthermore, most studies only evaluated the aqueous secretion and ignored the effects on the lipid and mucus components of tears.…”

“…The slope was -0.08 to 0.11 indicating no bias in the difference between instruments with the magnitude of the NIBUT. Repeated measurements from the two sessions were not significantly Despite the considerable number of papers published on the Tearscope and Tearscope Plus, these instruments are no longer in production [17]. However, the new Polaris and Easytear are two instruments that are very similarly constructed.…”

“…NIBUT measurements have traditionally been obtained by observing the projection of a ring grid pattern onto the corneal surface 4–8 . However, the subjective nature of this evaluation introduces intersubject variability.…”
