The Istanbul Strait is one of the choke points in the international maritime trade. 44868 ships have passed through the Istanbul Strait in the last two years. These merchant ships are emitting exhaust gas emissions such as CO2, NOx, SOx inten?sively. These pollutants also affect human health and the environment. There is a consensus among scientists that ambient concentrations of particulate matter and SOx have negative health impacts, including asthma, heart attacks, hospital admissions, and premature mortality. In this study, the exhaust gas emissions from ships are estimated based on real ship movements, and analyses are made accord?ing to the reduction from 3.5-0.5% of the allowed sulphur content of the fuel was implemented on January 1, 2020. Firstly, Annex four which is containing the reg?ulations imposed by the International Maritime Organization was examined, and also SOx emission which is caused by ships passing through the Istanbul Strait was investigated. Also, a new approach to Trozzi and Vaccaro methodology was built. After, emission projections for 2030 and 2040 were made and the rate of SOx and particulate matter were analysed.

Norint sumažinti laivybos išmetamosiomis dujomis sukeliamą taršą, kuri turi didelę įtaką aplinkos ekologijai ir klimato kaitai, būtina kuo skubiau atkreipti dėmesį į naujus galimus alternatyvius jūrinius degalus, kiek galima daugiau prisidedant prie aplinkos saugojimo, nes laivyba turi didelį poveikį, kuris susijęs su šiltnamio dujų emisijomis. Straipsnyje analizuojama jūrų transporto įtaka ekologiniam aplinkos disbalansui. Nagrinėjamos suskystintų natūralių dujų (LNG) sistemos konstrukcijos ir jų panaudojimas. LNG lyginamos su sunkiuoju jūriniu kuru (HFO). Pateikiamos galimybės šio kuro pritaikymui laivyboje tolimesniam laikotarpiui, žiūrint kaip į rimtą perspektyvą, mažinant laivų sukeliamą neigiamą poveikį aplinkai. Atradimai parodo, kad, dirbant su aukšto slėgio dviejų rūšių degalus naudojančia vidaus degimo variklio (VDV) sistema, sumažinamos šiltnamio dujų emisijos (GHG) iki 21 proc. palyginti su VDV, dirbančiais vien HFO. Ši variklio technologija labiausiai tinka dideliems mažų apsukų dvitakčiams varikliams, kurie naudojami jūriniam plaukiojimui didesniais atstumais. Kalbant apie oro taršą, varikliai, naudojantys kurui dujas, yra labai efektyvi priemonė mažinti tokias emisijas, kaip anglies dioksidas CO2, azoto oksidai (NOx), sieros oksidai (SOx). Kad būtų pasiekti Tarptautinės Jūrų Organizacijos (TJO) Tier 3 reikalavimai dėl azoto oksidų, būtina taikyti išmetamųjų dujų valymą naudojant selektyviuosius katalizatorius (SCR) arba pačių išmetamųjų dujų recirkuliaciją (EGR).

Globally, the transport sector is responsible for the emission of 30% of all anthropogenic greenhouse gases (GHGs) which are the main reason behind the change in the climate and accelerated warming of the globe. This research estimated the emission of GHGs from vehicles in Bayero University, Kano and also established the pattern of vehicular GHG emissions on the campus taking into consideration the peculiarities of the transport systems on Nigerian university campuses. Data for the study were collected by issuing out questionnaires to residents of the campus and then manually enumerating the number and types of vehicles entering the campus through its main entrance. Using standard guidelines for estimation of emission of GHGs, the campus' vehicular carbon footprint was estimated and its pattern of emission established. It was found that the total annual vehicular GHGs emission for the campus is 2,360.22tCO 2 e, with motorcycles, sedans, buses, tricycles and trucks having 21.2%, 43.2%, 30.5%, 2% and 2.2% share of the emission respectively. Scenarios for reduction of emission on the campus were simulated, it was found that the use of bicycles in place of motorcycles and compressed natural gas buses in place of the conventional diesel and petrol powered ones have a potential of reducing emissions on the campus by 21% and 26% respectively. It was suggested that measures to curtail usage of private cars and motorcycles on the campus be introduced so as to make the transport sector sustainable and set the campus on the path to carbon neutrality.
