Review of chemical and electrokinetic remediation of PCBs contaminated soils and sediments

Abstract: Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are manmade organic compounds, and pollution due to PCBs has been a global environmental problem because of their persistence, long-range atmospheric transport and bioaccumulation. Many physical, chemical and biological technologies have been utilized to remediate PCBs contaminated soils and sediments, and there are some emerging new technologies and combined methods that may provide cost-effective alternatives to the existing remediation practice. This review provides a genera… Show more

“…But as it was soon discovered, these procedures were in fact a source for a de novo polychlorinated compound synthesis, the process by which dioxins are re-formed being investigated in the recent years [17][18][19]. Therefore, greater attention was focused on more chemical-based processes [6,10,[20][21][22][23], along with microbial ones [24].…”

“…Although their production and usage were banned in the late 1970s, increasing attention has been paid to the elimination of PCBs because of their high persistence, bioaccumulation and toxicity linked to diseases of the immune, reproductive, nervous and endocrine systems (Fan et al . 2016; Agulló et al . 2019).…”
