Review of Active Millimeter Wave Imaging Techniques for Personnel Security Screening

Abstract: This paper reviews recent progress of active millimeter wave (mmW) imaging techniques for personnel security screening. With the ability to penetrate clothing and the promised millimeter scale spatial resolution, mmW imaging has been widely pursued for personnel surveillance without the usual concern for radiation safety. A brief development history of mmW imaging is introduced. An overview of imaging research and developmental achievements, along with antenna considerations based on quasi-optical geometry, ph… Show more

“…In an extended sense, personnel security is a set of mechanisms, methods, techniques that ensure the protection and effectiveness of bodies for the development of business infrastructure from threats of destructive professionalism, unprofessionalism, increasing the number of people who have personal or corrupt ties to obtain their own benefits, etc. (Wang, Chang, Cui, 2019).…”

“…In recent years, active terahertz (THz) imaging ranging from 0.1 to 10 THz has received increasing attention in the fields of security screening, aerial imaging, medical diagnostics and non-destructive testing [1,2]. THz imaging modalities offer non-ionizing radiation and can operate in all-weather conditions [3]. Although visible and infrared frequencies can provide very high resolution, they cannot penetrate through some materials such as clothing.…”

“…They are also used for imaging purposes. Imaging at millimetre-waves (mmW) has many applications such as security screening [1][2][3], automotive radars [4,5], coincidence imaging [6], autonomous robotics [7][8][9], remote sensing [10][11][12], and concealed weapon detection [13][14][15]. In comparison to optical modalities, mmW signals can penetrate most optically opaque materials and operate in all-weather conditions.…”
