MASSIMI et al.PHYSICAL REVIEW C 81, 044616 (2010) The (n,γ ) cross section of 197 Au has been measured at n TOF in the resolved resonance region, up to 5 keV, with the aim of improving the accuracy in an energy range where it is not yet considered standard. The measurements were performed with two different experimental setup and detection techniques, the total energy method based on C 6 D 6 detectors, and the total absorption calorimetry based on a 4π BaF 2 array. By comparing the data collected with the two techniques, two accurate sets of neutron-capture yields have been obtained, which could be the basis for a new evaluation leading to an extended cross-section standard. Overall good agreement is found between the n TOF results and evaluated cross sections, with some significant exceptions for small resonances. A few resonances not included in the existing databases have also been observed.

A mini subcritical nuclear reactor was designed using Monte Carlo methods. The reactor has light water as moderator, natural uranium as fuel, and a 239PuBe neutron source. In the design uranium fuel was modeled in an arrangement of concentric rings: 8.5, 14.5, 20.5 26.5, 32.5 cm-inner radius, 3 cm-thick, and 36 cm-high. Different models were made from a single ring of natural uranium to five rings. For each case, the neutron spectra, the neutron fluence distribution, the effective multiplication factor, the amplification factor, and the reactor power were estimated. The ambient dose equivalent rate outside the mini reactor was also estimated. The maximum value for the keff (0.78) was obtained when five rings of fuel were used; this value is close to 0.86 which belongs to a Nuclear Chicago subcritical reactor which requires almost twice the amount of uranium than the mini subcritical reactor.

The predictive power of spallation models for isotopic cross sections

The experimental cross sections of isotopically identified products of spallation reactions induced by 136 Xe projectiles at 1 GeV/nucleon on hydrogen target were compared with predictions of a two-step model. The first stage of the reaction was described by the INCL++ model (version 5.3) of an intranuclear cascade of nucleon-nucleon and pion-nucleon collisions whereas the second stage was analyzed by means of four different models; ABLA07, GEM2, GEMINI ++ and SMM. Due to the fact that the experimental data cover a very broad range of elements; from Li (Z = 3) to Ba (Z = 56), the analysis could impose severe constraints on the applied reaction models. The quality of data reproduction by the theoretical models is discussed. Some systematic deviations of the theoretical predictions from the experimental results are observed.
