High-Pressure Vibrational and Polymorphic Response of 1,1-Diamino-2,2-dinitroethene Single Crystals: Raman Spectroscopy

Raman spectroscopy was used to examine the vibrational and polymorphic behavior of 1,1-diamino-2,2-dinitroethene (FOX-7) to elucidate its structural and chemical stability under high pressure. Measurements were performed on single crystals compressed in a diamond anvil cell, and data were obtained over the entire frequency range of FOX-7 Raman activity. Several new features were observed with increase of pressure: (i) new vibrational peaks and discontinuity in the shifts of the peaks at 2 and 4.5 GPa, (ii) apparent coupling or mixing of several modes, and (iii) changes in the NH2 stretching spectral shape and modes shift. The spectral changes at 2 GPa, in contrast to previous reports, involved only a few peaks and likely resulted from a small molecular transformation. In contrast, changes at 4.5 GPa involved most of the modes, and the pressure for the onset and completion of the changes depended on the pressure medium. A large pressure hysteresis regarding the changes at 4.5 GPa implies a reconstructive transformation. We suggest that this transformation reflects a change in the balance between interlayer (van der Waals) and in-layer (H-bonding) interactions. Despite these transformations, further compression to 40 GPa and subsequent release of pressure did not cause any irreversible changes. This finding implies that FOX-7 has remarkable chemical stability under high pressures. The observed coupling between the various modes with increasing pressure was analyzed within the Fermi resonance model. The potential implication of the coupling of modes for shock insensitivity of FOX-7 is briefly discussed.

Water is a resource essential for all life and on which society depends but undervalues. This paper presents theories on methods to pivot from linear, extractive uses of water to considering water as a high value, circular resource. Analysis of the literature, which is primarily focused at the abstractor scale, has highlighted the prioritization of human water rights over environmental needs without incorporating the ramifications of environmental degradation and the complexities of applying a market-driven approach to a heterogeneous resource particularly at the domestic consumer level. A discussion of the relationship between society and water, in particular mechanisms that have been used to reduce water consumption, highlights the complexity of this issue and the need to consider fairness and equity at the global and local scales. A comparison of global, urban water supply and sanitation costs shows the extensive variation in the amounts of water consumed and the prices paid at the domestic consumer scale. Finally, a series of hypotheses are presented that, with local development, testing and refinement, are posited to bring about change in the value society places on water.

The process and pathways of excretion of high-lipophilicity (logP = 8.14) compound 4-methyl-2,6-diisobornylphenol (IBPH) from rat organism was investigated using HPLC by evaluating the renal excretion and elimination through the gastrointestinal tract (GIT) with feces and bile. IBPH was administrated orally in a single dose of 20 mg/kg with starch slime. Then, 81% of the administered amount was found in rat feces. The kinetics of drug excretion through the GIT revealed two phases of elimination: (1) rapid phase (within 24 h after IBPH administration), when 70% of the administered dose was excreted and (2) slow phase (within 24 -96 h ) possibly related to elimination from depot tissues and organs. The IBPH concentration found in the bile is one order lower than that in the blood plasma, but the time of attaining the maximum concentration differs rather insignificantly. Despite high concentrations of IBPH in kidneys, the renal excretion pathway has appeared minor: the total amount of IBPH in urine for 4 days was only about 0.01% of the administered dose.
