Reversible single-crystal to single-crystal polymorphic phase transformation of an organic crystal

Abstract: Two polymorphs of a substituted dihydroanthracene derivative were prepared by crystallization from different solvents. Each polymorph is reversibly interconvertible to the other by means of a single-crystal to single-crystal phase transformation.

“…Since not all phase transitions follow a single-crystal-to-single-crystal mechanism [60][61], investigating such events with single crystal X-ray diffraction proves difficult at best. PXRD is measured in the bulk with randomised orientation and thus the conditions can be varied widely without loss of applicability of the method.…”

“…Hence, the reversible SCSC phase transition is a fascinating phenomenon because of its potential applications in ferroelectric and switchable dielectric devices [1][2][3]. Several molecular crystals that undergo temperature-induced reversible SCSC phase transition have been reported [4][5][6][7][8][9][10].…”
