“…4b ). 18 The new series of azobenzene-based T-shaped asymmetric bolaamphiphiles (8) were synthesized, and their self-assembly behavior, photo-responsive behavior in their LC solution, and gel states were investigated. Such compounds can self-assemble into double-wall triangular and square honeycomb mesophases in their bulk states and organogels with different morphologies in various solvents.…”

“…In 2016, a study was reported on liquid crystal (LC) and gelation-based self-assembly, as well as the photoresponsive behavior of a new unsymmetrical azobenzene-cholesterol based dimesogen, 288 [77]. This molecule assembles a CN group at one end and a cholesterol carbonate, fixed through an oxyethylene spacer, to the opposite end of the azobenzene unit (Scheme 71).…”

“…The photoresponsive character was also proven in solution, in LC and gel states. These properties give to compound 288 potential applications in displays, as chiral mesogenic dye dopants, photochemical molecular switches, and new versatile LMGs [77].…”

“…Introduction of the azobenzene moiety into the molecular structure of LC materials resulted in photo-switchable LCs 11 , 12 . Also, azo compounds have extended a variety of biological activities 13 15 , optical-switches, and non-linear optics (NLO) 1 , 16 21 . In addition, they have been used as absorbing dyes molecules 22 due to their ability for molecular trans/cis photo-isomerization when irradiated with UV light 23 .…”
