Reverse Logistic Strategy for the Management of Tire Waste in Mexico and Russia: Review and Conceptual Model

Abstract: Management of tire waste is an important aspect of sustainable development due to its environmental, economical and social impacts. Key aspects of Reverse Logistics (RL) and Green Logistics (GL), such as recycling, re-manufacturing and reusable packaging, can improve the management of tire waste and support sustainability. Although these processes have been performed with a high degree of efficiency in other countries such as Japan, Spain and Germany, the application in Mexico and Russia has faced setbacks due… Show more

“…Consequently, in the 70's, a research line appears on product recovery or reverse distribution focusing on product returns and operational processes of managing end-of-life (EOL) products [20]. This reverse process is called "Reverse Logistics" encompasses all the logistic activities from used products which are no longer required by the users to products again usable in a market [34].…”

“…Such is the case of Uriarte-Miranda et al [16], where strategies for waste tire management become important due to its economic, social, and environmental impacts. This article shows a reverse logistics model for the waste tire management systems in México and Russia (two specific processes: remanufacturing and diversification) so that it is affordable and sustainable.…”

“…For this purpose, the execution of tire reverse logistics must be supported by strategic, tactical and operational decisions (see Table 1). Thus, the following factors should be considered in the decision to implement reverse logistics process in the tire industry [5]:…”

“…The adoption of this strategy will ensure less impact to the environment while recovering the value of the tire which would otherwise end up in landfills. It was found by [5] that this strategy will result a significant savings in energy demand in production capacity and materials during the manufacturing process (i.e. 66 per cent).…”
