Revealing the differential protein profiles behind the nitrogen use efficiency in popcorn (Zea mays var. everta)

Abstract: We investigated the proteomic profiles of two popcorn inbred lines, P2 (N-efficient and N-responsive) and L80 (N-inefficient and nonresponsive to N), under low (10% of N supply) and high (100% of N supply) nitrogen environments, associated with agronomic- and physiological-related traits to NUE. The comparative proteomic analysis allowed the identification of 79 differentially accumulated proteins (DAPs) in the comparison of high/low N for P2 and 96 DAPs in the comparison of high/low N for L80. The NUE and N u… Show more

“…Photosynthesis is one of the most important processes in crop N response and NUE [ 57 ] and its proteins are among those prominently affected by nitrogen status [ 34 , 58 ]. Our RT-qPCR data validate the higher downregulation of the DEG PsaN (photosystem I subunit N) by low urea in the low-NUE genotype relative to the high-NUE genotype.…”

“…[ 14 ]. Nevertheless, some successful examples of NUE improvement in rice included targeted assimilation, transporters [ 19 , 20 , 21 , 22 , 23 , 24 , 25 ], transcription factors (TFs) [ 26 , 27 , 28 , 29 , 30 , 31 , 32 , 33 ] and others [ 12 , 29 , 34 , 35 , 36 , 37 , 38 , 39 ].…”

“…Indeed, it is well-known that proline accumulates in plants subjected to environmental stress [ 28 ], maintaining osmotic balance and protecting cells against ROS under salt stress [ 29 ]. The biological significance of the alanine accumulation in plants is still controversial; indeed, its accumulation may be a N-storage mechanism, before restoring to an N-normal condition [ 30 ]. Thus, it is more difficult to explain the alanine increase in the N-use-inefficient genotypes.…”

“…Process annotation of urea-responsive DEGs revealed photosynthesis, chloroplast and response to water (Supplementary Table S2) among those prominently regulated by urea in both contrasting rice genotypes. Photosynthesis is one of the most important processes in crop N response and NUE (Long, 2020) and its proteins are among those prominently affected by nitrogen status (Khan et al, 2022, Mu et al, 2017). Our RT-qPCR data validate the higher downregulation of the DEG PsaN (photosystem I subunit N) by low urea in the low NUE genotype relative to the high NUE genotype.…”
