The use of industrial by-products as substitute to conventional natural resources in ceramic production is of interest from an environment preservation and solid wastes management. This paper deals with the recycling of tailings from spodumene concentration during lithium production (Quartz Feldspar Sand; QFS), for the production of porcelain and structural materials. The QFS obtained from spodumene processing consisted mainly of quartz, albite, microcline with traces of muscovite. Mixtures of QFS and standard porcelain ingredients were sintered at 1050-1200 °C at 50 °C intervals and their properties were compared with a conventional porcelain composition prepared under the same conditions. Phase composition was assessed by XRD analysis using Rietveld refinement. Tests such as water absorption, apparent density, sintering shrinkage, compressive and flexural strength were used for physical comparison. The results showed that higher densification was achieved at 1200 °C, with a drastic reduction of water absorption below 1%. A compressive strength of 40 MPa was obtained at 1050 °C in the composition made of 50 wt% QFS and 50 wt% kaolin, increasing to 85 MPa at 1100°C. The strength increase was attributed to better glassy phase formation and mullite growth. The QFS was found to contain no hazardous elements and showed promising sintering results, indicating its high suitability to substitute conventional resources in the production of ceramic materials.

Fly ash is alumina-silica waste products from the combustion of palm fiber and shells in the boiler which are collected at the multi-cyclone collectors where almost 3 million tonnes per annum being produced in palm oil industry in Malaysia. The aim of this paper is to investigate the replacement of feldspar by fly ash as potential fluxing agent in triaxial porcelain. Clay, feldspar, quartz and fly ash were mixed for 12 hours, pressed into pellets and sintered at 1250 ºC. The samples were measured according to the physical and mechanical properties. Microstructure study was done through SEM analysis. The optimum composition of fly ash was observed at 5 wt.% where the maximum compressive strength was achieved at 105.04 MPa and shows the decreasing results in volume shrinkage. SEM study shows intense interlocking between the primary and secondary mullite needles in glassy matrix which contribute in improving the strength of the porcelain at this composition. Therefore the substitution of fly ash is suitable as a fluxing agent in porcelain that improved its physical and mechanical properties.

Ülkemizde mermer ve bor gibi önemli minerallerin sanayi atıkları mevcuttur. Mermerin ocaktan çıkarılıp piyasaya işlenmiş ürün olarak sunulmasına kadar çeşitli aşamalarda farklı boyutlarda ve özelliklerde atıklar meydana gelmektedir. Mermer atıkları kalsiyum karbonat kaynaklarından birisi olup, plastik, kauçuk ve boya gibi endüstrilerde dolgu maddesi olarak kullanılabilmekte ve ürünlere çeşitli özellikler kazandırabilmektedir. Mermer atıklarının dolgu maddesi olarak kullanılabilmesi için; yüksek derecede hidrofobiklik ve beyazlık özelliklerine sahip olması ve mikronize boyuta kadar öğütülebilmesi gereklidir. Çok ince boyutlara öğütülse bile mikronize mermer atığı hidrofilik yapısı nedeniyle, genellikle plastik endüstrisi gibi alanlarda doğrudan kullanımı çoğu zaman mümkün olmamaktadır. Bu nedenle, hidrofilik özellikteki mermer atıkları teknik bir gereklilik olan bir yüzey modifikasyonu işlemi ile hidrofobik hale getirilmelidir. Yağ asitleri ve türevleri, surfektantlar, reçine, çeşitli organo-metalik bileşikler, titanat ve silan gibi çeşitli organik yüzey modifiye edici maddeler ile oksit yüzeylerindeki hidroksil gruplarının miktarı azaltılarak hidrofilik türler hidrofobikler ile değiştirebilir. Bu çalışmada, doğaya atılan mermer atıklarını değerlendirmek amacı ile yüzeylerinin çeşitli silan maddeleri ile modifiye edilerek epoksi polimerlerde dolgu maddesi olarak kullanım imkânı araştırılmıştır. Bu kapsamda; farklı konsantrasyonlarda (1, 5 ve 10 mL) 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (3-APTES), 3-(trimethoxysilyl) propylmethacrylate (TMPSM) ve N-(2-Aminoethyl)-3-(trimethoxysilyl) propylamine (N2AE-3APTMS) gibi silan bileşikleriyle yüzeyleri modifiye edilen mermer atıklarının polimer yapısına farklı oranlarda (% 0, 5, 10) ilavesi ile üretilen kompozit numunelerin yüzey temas açıları üzerindeki etkileri incelenmiştir. Modifikasyonda kullanılan silan miktarının 1 mL'den 10 mL'ye artırılması durumunda temas açısının arttığı görülmüştür. Aynı şekilde katkısız epoksinin temas açısı 88,88 o 'den % 5 yüzey modifiyesiz (99,35 o) ve % 10 yüzey modifiyeli (99,16 o) mermer atığı katkılı kompozitlerde temas açısını artırarak hidrofobik karakteri yükseltmiştir.
