The adsorption of a cationic dye, Basic Blue 16 (BB16), by montmorillonitic clay was studied in detail. Changes in the molecular structure during adsorption were analyzed by FTIR spectroscopy. BB16 adsorption onto the clay mainly results from hydrogen bonding between OH and NH 2 groups of dye molecules and OH groups of clay and electrostatic interaction between the negatively charged clay surface and cationic dye. The montmorillonitic clay dose had an inverse effect on the adsorption performance, while the highest dye removal was 305 mg/g at pH 3.6. An increase in temperature and dye concentration positively enhanced the adsorption capacity of the montmorillonitic clay. Temperature had no effect on the adsorption at a dye concentration less than 500 mg/L, while dye adsorption was positively enhanced at elevated dye concentrations. Three-parameter equations provided higher better fitting than two-parameter equations while the Freundlich model had the highest correlation coefficient and the lowest error values with experimental data. The BB16 adsorption was well followed by pseudo-second order model and the rate of adsorption process was controlled by surface and intraparticle diffusion. Thermodynamic evaluations revealed that the adsorption process was spontaneous and endothermic, while the randomness increased during adsorption. Experimental results indicate that montmorillonitic clay from Eskisehir is a promising adsorbent for the removal of cationic dye molecules from aqueous solutions.

Nowadays, parallel to the increasing use of nuclear technology, radiation protection becomes an important issue. The use of materials, such as (Pb) lead, has become standard for protection from radiation. Improving the radiation attenuation properties of new types of materials has become more essential. In this study, the shielding properties of panels containing boron (B) waste (borogypsum) that were produced with different iron (Fe) mineral additives were studied. The attenuation properties of two types of panels produced by using magnetite and borogypsum against gamma radiation were investigated. It was found that gamma radiation protection decreases as the borogypsum contribution to the magnetite panel mixture increases. At the same time, it was observed that the linear attenuation coefficient and water absorption decrease due to the increase in borogypsum additive and sintering temperature inside the panels.

Purification of raw bentonites and organo-bentonite preparations is sometimes required for industrial use. Zeta (electrokinetic) potential (ζ), contact angle (wettability/hydrophobicity), and surface free energy (SFE) are important surface characteristics and vary significantly according to the applied surfactant concentration when preparing organo-bentonite. Changes in these characteristics determine the stability, behavior, and efficiency of organo-bentonites in various applications such as adsorption, composite materials, and drug-delivery systems. Knowing how much surfactant should be used to prepare organo-bentonite is, therefore, critical. The purpose of the present study was to determine the effect of concentration of the cationic surfactant cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) adsorbed in organo-bentonite (prepared from two local and commercial raw bentonites with potential for use in adsorbent and composite materials) on the ζ potential, contact angle, and SFE profiles. The raw bentonites were purified using sedimentation and centrifugation techniques prior to preparation of the organo-bentonite. The purification results were evaluated in light of X-ray diffraction (XRD), cation exchange capacity (CEC), free swelling volume (FSV), X-ray fluorescence (XRF), and particle-size analysis data. Most of the gangue minerals (feldspar, calcite, clinoptilolite, opal, quartz, and mica) having particle size >5 μm were removed from the raw bentonites by using a one-stage sedimentation or a Falcon gravity separator (FGS). Higher yields (68.8% and 81.3% for two bentonites) were obtained with the FGS compared to sedimentation while purification levels were almost the same. ζ changed greatly from –35 mV (and –40 mV) toward 38 mV (and 40 mV) with increasing CTAB concentrations. Similar profiles were also obtained for wettability; maximum contact angles for organo-bentonites were measured as ~72–73o, while they were 12.65 and 14.1o for two purified and unmodified bentonites. SFEs were calculated using contact-angle data, and decreased to minimum values of 41.5–43.6 mJ/m2 from 78.6–78.2 mJ/m2 upon treatment of raw bentonites with CTAB. 100–130% CEC concentration was sufficient to prepare organo-bentonites with maximum hydrophobicity and positively charged surfaces.

Having symmetrical and balanced material properties, polymer matrix composites are increasingly becoming popular due to easiness of construction and are use in the production of aerospace and automotive structures. In the study, we developed polymer composites based on epoxy resins, containing up to 40 wt.% of blast furnace slag and determined their pin-on-disc dynamic friction, wear, Shore hardness and surface roughness values. Wear tests were performed using a pin-on-disc under dry friction conditions, at the loads of 5, 10, 15 and 30 N, using slip velocity of 0.3 m/s and along distance of 500 m. The hardness and wear resistance values increased with the increase in the content of blast furnace slag. Showing the relationship between wear rate and hardness, an equation with parameters dependent on load was provided. There was an increase in the dynamic friction with an increase in the surface roughness. In addition, dynamic friction was an increasing function of the wear rate. The wear surfaces of the polymer composites were analyzed using scanning electron microscopy. It was observed that the wear rate of the epoxy composites and pure epoxy samples ranged from 19.85 to 171.42 mm 3 /N m.

Nine sets of (3 × 3) InP nanofiber samples have been successfully prepared at three different voltages (20, 25, 30 kV) and at three separate heights (5, 7, 10 cm) by electrospinning with a constant precursor flow rate of 0.3 mLh−1. The crystalline structure, thermal, morphologies and nanostructure, electrical, and optical properties of the samples are characterized by X‐ray powder diffractometer (XRD) and thermal gravity‐differential scanning calorimeter (TG‐DSC), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), by Four‐Point Probe Technique (FPPT,) and ultraviolet/visible spectrometry (UV/VIS), respectively. From these measurements, we have found the formation of stoichiometric nanostructured InP with zinc‐blende structure and having lattice parameter of a = 5.874 Å, weight loss of 64.59% and crystallization temperature of 500°C, average fiber diameter of 65.82 nm, the activation energies, Ea, of the samples, and band gap energy, Eg, of the nanofibers developed at constant applied voltage 30 kV. The band gap energies determined at different distances 5, 7, and 10 cm are found to be as 1.29, 1.37, and 1.30 eV, respectively.
