Returning to a Normal Life via COVID-19 Vaccines in the United States: A Large-scale Agent-Based Simulation Study

Abstract: Background In 2020, COVID-19 has claimed more than 300,000 deaths in the United States alone. Although nonpharmaceutical interventions were implemented by federal and state governments in the United States, these efforts have failed to contain the virus. Following the Food and Drug Administration's approval of two COVID-19 vaccines, however, the hope for the return to normalcy has been renewed. This hope rests on an unprecedented nationwide vaccine campaign, which faces many logistical challenges a… Show more

“…Approval of COVID-19 vaccines for emergency use has significantly raised the hopes for recovery since the COVID-19 vaccines can effectively lower the spread of the virus and help attain herd immunity against the virus . There is an expectation that life will go back to normal with the increasing availability of COVID-19 vaccines (Li & Giabbanelli, 2021), which is likely to improve the demand for hospitality and tourism products.…”

“…With several vaccines having being developed against COVID-19, a large number of articles have been written investigating their potential impact. Consider, for example [64][65][66][67][68][69][70][71][72][73][74][75]. In [66] and [73], the impact of vaccination on cases, hospitalisations and deaths was studied using agent-based models, these two articles focussing on areas in the United States and Canada, respectively.…”
