Un problema que reportan con frecuencia los cuidadores de menores es su rechazo a la ingesta de alimentos. Existe evidencia de que dicho problema se exacerba en aquellos con diagnóstico de trastorno del espectro autista (TEA). En México se desconoce la existencia de esos problemas en dicha población, por lo que el propósito del presente estudio fue realizar un análisis exploratorio y descriptivo de la prevalencia y características de la conducta alimentaria en niños autistas. Los padres contestaron un cuestionario para obtener datos sociodemográficos, conductas problemáticas observadas al momento de comer, prácticas de alimentación, preferencias de alimentos, información médica y consumo de alimentos por parte de la familia y de los menores, hallándose que dos tercios de estos mostraban conductas problemáticas, siendo las más frecuentes el abandonar la mesa y rechazar comer. Los menores con problemas de conducta consumían menos alimentos que aquellos sin problemas. Adicionalmente, se encontró que hay una relación positiva entre el número de alimentos consumidos por los menores y por su familia. Los resultados de esta investigación representan una aproximación inicial a la evaluación de problemas pediátricos de la alimentación en menores con diagnóstico de TEA en población mexicana.

A problem frequently reported by caregivers of children is food-refusal behavior. Evidence shows that this problem is exacerbated in children with a diagnostic of Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD). In Mexico the prevalence of these problems on this population is unknown. The aim of this study was to conduct an exploratory and descriptive study of the prevalence and characteristics of eating behavior in children diagnosed with ASD. Parents or caregivers of children with a diagnosis of ASD were asked to answer a questionnaire, expressly prepared to obtain sociodemographic data of both parents and children, information of difficult and problematic behavior at mealtime, feeding practices, food preferences, medical information and food consumption by the family and children. It was found that 62.2% of children presented eating behavior problems at mealtime, the most frequent was leaving the table and food refusal. Children with behavior problems ate les food than children without behavior problems. Also a correlation between the number of foods consumed by the family and the child was found. The results of this study represent an initial approximation to the evaluation of pediatric feeding problems in children with ASD in a Mexican population.

“…Subsequently, we continued to consider within‐session patterns of responding but based our final conclusions on overall rates of the target behavior across sessions of the FA. This was done because although increases in behavior during a given test condition are usually indicative of a reinforcement effect, at times decreasing trends occurred because the participant's responding became more efficient under a fixed ratio schedule (Eckerman & Lanson, 1969; Hernández et al, 2018). A goal of some functional analysis (FA) variations is to reduce assessment time while still maintaining efficacy. This may be especially important when conducting FAs in early intervention programs, where time is a crucial commodity. To that end, we evaluated a model for using the results of the no-interaction condition as a screening for behavioral function and to guide selection of FA test conditions with 20 participants (22 assessments) aged 3 to 7 years old. We used the no-interaction condition to develop hypotheses for both automatic reinforcement and socially mediated reinforcement. The outcome of the no-interaction condition guided the selection of test conditions for the remainder of the FA. We also incorporated methods from prior FA studies (e.g., divided attention) to modify the test conditions. We obtained differentiated results in 91% of assessments, all within 70 min and, as such, extended evidence that an FA can be completed in little time without sacrificing efficacy.
