Retrofitting of interior RC beam–column joints using CFRP strengthened SHCC: Cast-in-place solution

Abstract: The effectiveness of a repair strategy, for damaged RC beam-column joints, that combines strain hardening cementitious composite (SHCC) and laminates of carbon fibre reinforced polymers (CFRP laminates) is assessed in the present work. According to this technique, existing concrete cover in the joint zone of the frame is replaced by a self-compacting SHCC. This thin layer of SHCC is reinforced with CFRP laminates that are bonded into the saw cut grooves. Two full-scale severely damaged interior RC beam-column … Show more

“…However, beyond this point the rate of the strength degradation, due to the sliding of the longitudinal rebars of the beams, has increased. Adopting a balanced energy approach discussed in [23], the equivalent bilinear perfectly elastoplastic curves of the storey-shear versus drift-angles for both specimens were determined. Using the obtained bilinear curve, the displacement ductility factor for each specimen was calculated as the ratio of the ultimate displacement to the yield displacement.…”

“…HCP can be attached to the substrate using mechanical anchors, since SHCC offers sufficient bearing capacity [21]. Both solutions, cast-in-place and HCP, showed noticeable improvements in the seismic performance of repaired severely damaged two-dimensional interior RC beam column joints [22,23].…”

“…Considerable amount of experimental and analytical studies have been carried out to investigate the seismic performance of RC beam-column joints subjected to lateral earthquake loading (Elsouri and Harajli (2013), Lee et al (2009), Masi et al (2013) and Sasmal et al (2013)) or development of retrofitting techniques for vulnerable existing RC beam column joints (Eslami and Ronagh (2014), Esmaeeli et al (2014), Vecchio et al (2016), Shwan and Abdul Razak (2016), Esmaeeli et al (2015) and Campione et al (2015)). Some of these researches were concentrated on shear resistance and behavior of RC beam-column joints.…”

“…During earthquake, failure frequently occurs in joint, which is the main component for transferring load and providing stability to the structure. Moreover, the structures that follow the seismic codes in designing are also prone to damage during earthquakes (Esmaeeli et al, 2015). Beam–column joint design is complicated and remains as a challenge for structural engineers (Vaghani et al, 2015).…”
