RETRACTED ARTICLE: A comparison of risk factors for age-related macular degeneration and polypoidal choroidal vasculopathy in Chinese patients

Abstract: The risk factors for nAMD and PCV is varying with the exception of smoking. Our findings suggest that different strategies might be applied in the clinical management and scientific research on nAMD and PCV.

“…PCV and CNV are two subtypes of wAMD. They have many common clinical characteristics and risk factors, but there are also many different epidemiological characteristics, indicating that they have different pathophysiological processes (48)(49)(50). These differences have led to a certain difference in the therapeutic effect between intravitreal injection of anti-VEGF drugs on PCV and CNV (51,52).…”

“…A variety of factors lead to the development of nAMD, which is mainly characterized as the formation of CNV via the action of multiple cytokines (such as VEGF, angiopoietin, inflammatory factors, insulin-like growth factor1, cyclooxygenase-2, chemokine receptor-3, and primary fibroblast growth factor). Any of these cytokines causes damage to Bruch’s membrane, which in turn is accompanied by a relative or absolute increase in VEGF and aggregation of inflammatory factors, leading to the occurrence of CNV ( Cheung et al, 2017 ; Chen et al, 2018 ).…”

“…O fator de risco positivo com maior significância estatística nesta pesquisa foi o tabagismo (p=0,03), o que é comprovado na literatura como relevante no desenvolvimento da DMRI. (20)(21)(22) Podem ser consideradas como limitações deste estudo a pequena amostragem e o fato de ter sido realizado num hospital universitário, de encaminhamento de referência terceirizada no tratamento dos casos avançados de DMRI. Esse fato pode até ter sobressaído indiretamente nesta amostragem referente ao tabagismo.…”
