“…There was no association in the present study or in other studies between recent glycemic control and retinopathy or AER in either group (4,5,11,(14)(15)(16)(17). These findings contrast with the strong association between long-term glycemic control and the presence and severity of retinopathy and microalbuminuria in IDDM (8,14,15).…”

“…In those studies only early background retinopathy, glomerular hyperfiltration, and microalbuminuria were found. Our findings are in keeping with the observations by Mohan et al (11), who reported that 3 of their 40 patients (8%) with diabetes secondary to tropical pancreatitis had proliferative retinopathy. Additionally, in another report, 7% had overt nephropathy (urinary protein excretion >500 /u-g), and 17% renal insufficiency (serum creatinine >133 /xmol/1) (12).…”

“…However, studies from Chennai in the 1980s showed the presence of advanced stages of diabetic retinopathy in these patients [56]. Nephropathy, neuropathy [57] and autonomic neuropathy [58,59] have also been reported in these patients, with studies reporting onset of autonomic neuropathy as early as 2 years after the diagnosis [60].…”

“…diabetes began to attract attention, and the prevalence and characteristics of retinopathy have been studied in many cases of pancreatic diabetes (Maekawa et al 1978; Tiengo et al 1983; Couet et al 1985; Mohan et al 1985).…”

“…These findings supported the view proposed by Sprague (1947) and Deckert (1960). Regarding the severity of diabetic retinopathy, the prevalence of severe retinopathy (i.e., proliferative retinopathy) in patients with pancreatic diabetes has been reported to be low (Maekawa et al 1978;Mohan et al 1985). In the present study, however, rapid progression of retinopathy was observed even in patients in whom calcifying pancreatitis was detected earlier than diabetes.…”
