Retinal pigment epithelium in the pathogenesis of age‐related macular degeneration and photobiomodulation as a potential therapy?

Abstract: The retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) comprises a monolayer of cells located between the neuroretina and the choriocapillaries. The RPE serves several important functions in the eye: formation of the blood-retinal barrier, protection of the retina from oxidative stress, nutrient delivery and waste disposal, ionic homeostasis, phagocytosis of photoreceptor outer segments, synthesis and release of growth factors, reisomerization of all-trans-retinal during the visual cycle, and establishment of ocular immune priv… Show more

“…Epithelial cells from different anatomical sites are not identical. For example, in vivo, RPEs are postmitotic, monolayer cells (38), whereas oral keratinocytes form multilayer structures composed of differentially located dividing or postmitotic (differentiated) cells (30). Therefore, it might not be surprising if specific characteristics of in vitro infection with HCMV were to differ depending upon the type of epithelial cell studied.…”

“…The eye is an immune privileged site in which in ammatory responses are limited in order to minimize the risk to vision integrity [48][49][50][51][52] . RPE cells play an important role in this phenomenon by producing immunosuppressive factors such as TGF-β, alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone (α-MSH) and vasoactive intestinal peptide [48][49][50][51] as well as by inhibiting immune T cells and converting T cells to regulatory (Treg) cells 52 . Therefore, the immunosuppressive ocular microenvironment around the choroid and RPE could also facilitate the establishment of MCMV latency there.…”

“…В целом считают, что ВМД вызвана сочетанием генетических причин и факторов окружающей среды, то есть представляет мультифакторное заболевание [3]. Исследования патогенеза ВМД последних лет сосредоточены на патологических процессах, происходящих в ПЭС [4]. Помимо того что ПЭС является частью гематоофтальмического барьера, он выполняет ряд функций, играющих решающую роль в сохранении сетчатки и, следовательно, зрения.…”
