Retinal Nerve Fiber Layer Thickness, Brain Atrophy, and Disability in Multiple Sclerosis Patients

Abstract: This study shows that RNFL thickness correlates with BCR and with MS subtypes. Additionally, our study indicates that OCT is better suited for MS assessment than GDx. We conclude that the damage of retinal axons appears related to brain damage in patients with MS.

“…Several studies have observed a relationship between OCT measurements and EDSS score or disease duration [16,18,23,24,25]. Our results indicated no correlation between choroidal thickness and EDSS score, however a significant inverse correlation was detected between choroidal thickness and disease duration.…”

“…We also confirmed the results of previous studies that indicate a tendency of RNFL atrophy to be greater in ON-affected eyes than in unaffected eyes [20,21,22]. Previous studies reported that RNFL thickness was correlated with functional and structural measures of MS such as visual acuity, visual field, low-contrast letter acuity, contrast sensitivity, color vision, visual evoked potentials, brain atrophy assessed by magnetic resonance imaging and even quality of life [16,23,24,25,26]. In our study no correlation was found between RNFL and choroidal thickness measurements in both MS ON and MS non-ON eyes.…”

“…All of these OCT parameters have been associated with MS disability 7,8 and brain atrophy 7,9 and for this reason its application offers the promise of being used as an imaging surrogate of the MS disease course.…”

“…It can measure the thickness of the retinal nerve fibre layer and the ganglion cell layer. Retinal axonal loss, regardless of clinical history of optic neuritis, may be a good marker of clinical disability in MS [135][136][137][138][139] and correlates with brain atrophy [140,141].…”
