Voluntary tourism, one of the alternative tourism types developed with a sense of justice in tourism recently, is based on the understanding of voluntary service. This study is important for several reasons; examining studies in line with various criteria, contributing to the literature and setting an example for researchers who will work in this field. Therefore, articles on "Volunteering Tourism" published in the national refereed journal system indexed by ULAKBIM between 2000-2020 are analyzed and keyword "Volunteer Tourism" in the title, abstract, keywords, and content were examined. Content analysis method was used to analyze the data. According to the results; In Turkey, voluntary tourism studies have gained importance between 2011-2015. Especially publications have been increased since 2015 and it was determined that the majority of the articles were prepared in Turkish and quantitative research methods used generally. Based on the results, suggestions have been made to increase and diversify the quality and quantity of research conducted in this field to raise awareness on volunteer tourism in Turkey. Besides, it has been revealed that studies in foreign languages should be increased.

Drawing upon research from six volunteer projects in Cambodia, this paper explores the volunteer host community as a 'space' that has its own rules and normalized ways of behaving that influences the assistance prospective beneficiaries receive. Underpinned by Bourdieu's theory of field's, qualitative interviews and participant observation is conducted with both volunteers and hosts. This paper concludes that volunteer project rules are not homogeneous and that normalized ways of behaving can lead to unregulated and unsustainable practice but also integrated and productive outcomes. This suggests a more regulative and structured approach to volunteer tourism led by media and volunteers themselves may enhance the sustainable foundation of the sector.

The outcomes of volunteer tourism have rarely evaluated, and the sustainable practices, such as equality within this sector, are questionable. Extant research has indicated that miscommunication and poor volunteer placement management can lead to ineffectiveness and negative experiences for stakeholders such as host project staff and volunteers. Collaborative relations between the main stakeholders at a local level were evaluated and deconstructed to enable a better understanding of operational practices that influence sustainable outcomes for host projects. This evaluative study examined the role of the receiving organisation at the host destination in achieving sustainable outcomes utilising a case study in South Africa. An evaluative framework integrating realistic evaluation, collaboration theory and supply chain analysis offered in-depth insights into why the local contextual settings influence how collaborative relations among stakeholders can influence sustainable outcomes. The receiving organisation's knowledge of the local socio-economic contextual settings of each host project is critical to the successful engagement between hosts and volunteers which leads to equality. The evaluative framework offers an understanding of how and why the local contextual settings and the prosocial approach by the local agent are essential in enabling sustainability performance in volunteer tourism.
