Rethinking environmental LCA life stages for transport infrastructure to facilitate holistic assessment

Abstract: Life cycle assessment (LCA) aims to provide a near full accounting of impacts from the complete life of a product, to avoid burden shifting between different parts of the life cycle. However, this is exceptionally difficult with transport infrastructure because important parts of their impact lie outside the widely applied industrial-product-oriented LCA life stages: production, manufacturing, use, and end of life. To account for those missing impacts, we propose a new framework for assessing the life cycle im… Show more

“…Toronto has long had a spatial concentration of cycling infrastructure in downtown. The service provided by any new element of transport infrastructure is magnified by the existing infrastructure it connects to (Saxe and Kasraian 2020). While the COVID cycling infrastructure included new infrastructure in the east and north of the city, these areas remain early on the S-Curve of accessibility given the limited links with pre-existing cycling infrastructure.…”

“…The framework also builds from peer re-evaluation work on the LCA to promote the sustainable re-use of resources, materials, and energy, particularly from the end-of-life of infrastructures for new vehicles [137]. It confirms, for instance, the importance of including pavement and infrastructural developments in LCA studies, given their importance to sustainability improvement.…”

“…Some GM technologies may require even more funds before being widely applicable. The cost of implementing GM technology includes supporting facilities [113], infrastructures [114], technicians etc. Third, the renewable energy sources may bring revolutionary changes to the manufacturing industry.…”
