Retention of Trained Performance in Consistent Mapping Search after Extended Delay

Abstract: We examined the retention of performance in memory, visual, and hybrid memory/visual search after subjects received extensive consistent mapping (CM) practice. In the first two experiments we examined retention of detection performance in memory scanning (Experiment 1) and in visual search (Experiment 2) approximately one month after training. In the third experiment we examined performance 1, 30, 90, 180, and 365 days following training on pure visual and hybrid memory/visual semantic-category search tasks. W… Show more

“…As a design strategy, overlearning (i.e., repeated practice even after correct performance has been demonstrated) can improve transfer especially for skills that may go unused for long intervals; CPR training is an example (Fisk, Hertzog, Lee, Rogers, & Anderson, 1994;Fisk & Hodge, 1992). Overlearning works by creating automatic responses that conserve a trainee's cognitive resources so that cognitive ability may be dedicated to solving novel or more complex tasks.…”

“…Researchers who followed the original work of Schneider and Shiffrin (1977) extended their basic model to include workload and dual-task performance (Fisk 329 & Schneider, 1983;Schneider & Fisk, 1984), automatic process development (Schneider & Fisk, 1984), skill acquisition (Fisk & Hodge, 1992), and training (Schneider, 1985). Recent reviews present a summary of the most up-to-date developments on automaticity research (Bargh & Ferguson, 2000;Moors & De Houwer, 2006).…”

“…Fisk and Hodge (1992) explored retention of skilled search using an interval of one year and Cooke, Durso, and Schvaneveldt (1994) demonstrated retention of visual search over a nine-year interval. In addition, some natural applications of retention and loss concepts have resulted in studies of the retention of other kinds of learned skills.…”
