“…Exposing rodents to low doses of MeHg + induces the accumulation of Hg in target organs [143][144][145]. In this way, Hg levels after co-exposure to SeMet have been measured in the brains, kidneys and livers of fish, aquatic birds, rodents and primates, but a number of inconsistencies have been found [146][147][148].…”

“…That Hg in fish tissue was suppressed by Se in our study was suggested by a strong negative correlation for both bluegill and largemouth bass. Several mechanisms for the antagonistic relationship between Hg and Se have been suggested, including Se inhibition of methylating bacteria by binding with inorganic Hg, and Se-mediated competition, redistribution, demethylation and elimination of MeHg from fish tissues (Arribére et al 2008;Bjerregaard et al 1999;Chen et al 2001;Iwata et al 1982;Yang et al 2008;Khan and Wang 2009). Fish tissue Hg and trophic position typically have a strong positive relationship because of the bioaccumulative nature of MeHg (Hall et al 1997).…”

“…Though often toxic, elevated levels of Se in fish have been linked to reduced fish tissue Hg (Arribére et al 2008;Chen et al 2001;Southworth et al 2000). For example, laboratory experiments with rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss, indicated that fish fed selenium-rich diets had enhanced elimination rates of MeHg and inorganic Hg from tissues (Bjerregaard et al 1999). Though previous research suggests that Se may decrease Hg concentrations in fish tissue, not enough is known to make predictions regarding fish tissue Hg accumulation near power plants.…”

“…Turner and Rudd (1983) suggested that Se had to be accumulated in the muscle of fish before the elimination of mercury from the muscle was promoted, but Bjerregaard et al (1999) showed that MeHg was eliminated from the muscle of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) without any significant accumulation of selenium in the tissue. These results indicate that there was a biochemical action of selenium on mercury and the muscle may not be the primary organ in which the interaction between Se and MeHg occurs, favoring the elimination of MeHg.…”
