Retail structural dynamics and the forces behind big-box retailing

Abstract: Recent change on the American retail landscape warrants a revisit to the catastrophe framework originated by Harris and Wilson (1978). A retail revolution, centered around the growth of big-box retailing, is recreating metropolitan retail structure. Alterations to both the sizes and spatial distributions of retailers in nearly every sector have resulted. This research presents a theoretical inquiry into the forces behind this change through an adoption and extension of the catastrophe theory framework. Results… Show more

“…It is notable that MSA adjacency is statistically significant in the Building Supply Stores equation. An example firm, Home Depot stores, average 130,000 square feet and 40-50,000 product lines (Value Line 2001), and big-box retailers like these are driven by the cost structures of the industry (Munroe, 2001). Finally, the statistically significant positive correlation coefficient in the Food Stores equation suggests that when the number of establishments in the place is above its expected value, the number of establishments in the neighboring area is also above its expected value.…”

“…Home improvement stores are one type of 'big box' retailing that has prospered in developed economies over the past decade (Hernandez & Simmons, 2006;Munroe, 2001). Like in other Chinese cities, home improvement stores in Beijing exist in three forms.…”

“…In Western cities, a 'retail revolution' is usually associated with the emergence and growth of new retail formats (Bromley & Thomas, 1993;Munroe, 2001;Spector, 2005;Wrigley & Lowe, 2002). Similarly, retail transformation in Chinese cities finds strong spatial articulation in the emergence and growth of new retail formats across the urban space.…”
