Resuming Normal Life as a Family Caregiver During Drip‐Like Recovery of Older Persons With Cognitive Impairment Recovering From Hip Surgery: A Grounded Theory

Abstract: Contributed equally to this work. AbstractPurpose: This study was undertaken to develop a theoretical framework explaining family caregiving processes for older persons with cognitive impairment recovering from hip fracture surgery. Design and Methods: In this grounded theory study, data were collected in audio-recorded face-to-face interviews with 21 family caregivers. Among these caregivers, 14 cared for hip-fractured persons with cognitive impairment, and seven cared for those without cognitive impairment. … Show more

“…The general susceptibility of the population to COVID-19 and considerable variations in the incubation period of the virus supplies new challenges to the diagnosis and treatment of orthopedic disorders. Fracture patients often do not comply due to swelling and pain, which prolongs the recovery of the joint function (9,10). And, elderly patients that recuperate over a long period are highly susceptible to respiratory failure, urinary, and genital tract infection, stones, bedsores, body temperature disorders, deep vein thrombosis, and other complications.…”

“…A grounded theory approach (Glaser & Strauss, 1967) was selected to better understand the interactions and conceptualise the process of family caregiving provided by multiple family caregivers for older adults following hip‐fracture surgery. This was part of a larger study on family caregiving following hip fracture (Shen et al, 2020).…”

“…Qualitative analysis refers to rational and non-mathematical reinterpretation to discover keywords, concepts, and relationships in raw data and then organize them into a theoretical scheme [37]. These qualitative methods are used in particular substantive areas about which little or much is known, but new knowledge is sought [38].…”
