We present an international comparison of broadsheet newspaper coverage of climate change. We employ two complementary theoretical lenses, multiple streams theory and institutional theory, to explore why climate change has become headline news in some countries but has received comparatively little coverage in others. The study utilizes a worldwide sample across 41 different countries for the year 2008, covering 113 leading national broadsheet newspapers. A cross-sectional regression model is used to identify whether and how a range of contextual factors impact coverage of climate change. To a certain extent, a country's direct exposure to climate change and the measures that have been taken to combat global warming influence the position of climate change on the media agenda. Crucially, however, we identify a number of contextual factors that impact climate change-related media coverage in different national contexts. In particular, we find a significantly positive relationship between regulatory quality and levels of media coverage. At the same time, unemployment trends are significantly negatively related to media attention to climate change. GDP per capita does not help to explain levels of climate change-related media coverage. In other words, climate change appears to have moved beyond simply being a 'rich country issue'.

Background: Currently, the perioperative care of fracture patients is compromised due to the outbreak of COVID-19 in China and the world. This study aims to assess the clinical features of fracture patients at our hospital during the COVID-19 outbreak and formulate the medical steps to ensure the effective treatment of fracture patients with minimal risk of infection to healthcare workers.Methods: One hundred twelve patients with different fractures that were admitted to the orthopedics department of our hospital from January 24 to March 9 in 2020 were reviewed. Data including age, gender, injury location, admission time, operation time, discharge time were compared with fracture patients from the same period in 2019Results: Compared to the same period in 2019, there is a 42% decrease in the number of fracture patients in 2020. Specifically, the incidences of forearm, thigh, hand, and foot fractures have increased during the COVID-19 outbreak, while other parts are less affected. The time from injury to hospitalization, the surgery wait time and time of discharge after surgery for patients with hip fractures were 2.9±7.1, 2.0±1.7 and 7.7± 4.0 days respectively in 2019, which changed to 2.0±5.0, 4.5±4.0 and 10.6±4.2 days in 2020. Following the orthopedic treatment regimen followed at our hospital, all patients had non-life-threatening limb fractures.Six patients were operated in a negative pressure room, and emergency screening was completed for six patients. No patients were positive for COVID-19, and all were discharged safely without infection or other serious complications.Conclusions: Hip fractures are highly prevalent during this epidemic. However, mandatory screening delays surgery by more than 48 hours. The orthopedic department should prioritize screening of emergency patients to minimize the risk of infection among other patients and medical personnel.

One of the key foundations in computer science is abstract algebra. Ideas of abstract algebra can be introduced to students at middle or pre-college schools to cultivate their capacity for logical thinking and problem-solving skills as well as gaining mathematical competency required in computer science. In this book chapter, we introduce ideas of mathematics gamification and a mobile app game, Algebra Game, richly rooted in abstract algebra and first proposed by the mathematician Tao (Gamifying algebra, 2012a, Software mock-up of algebra game 2012b). The Algebra Game teaches elementary algebra seemingly on the surface, and yet the game-play design possesses interesting abstract algebra ideas and mathematics gamification potential. We define mathematics gamification as the process of embedding mathematical concepts and their logical manipulations in a puzzle game-like setting aided by computers. We describe several mathematics gamification instances to enrich the Algebra Game play. Finally, we evaluate the learning efficacy of the Algebra Game mobile app software in computer science game tournaments modeled after eSportslike computer games in order to scale up the number of students who can learn the Algebra Game mathematics.
