Results of the Gas‐Phase Sulfur Intercomparison Experiment (GASIE): Overview of experimental setup, results and general conclusions

Abstract: Abstract. Seven techniques for the field measurement of trace atmospheric SO2 were compared simultaneously over 1 month in 1994 using samples produced in situ by dynamic dilution. Samples included SO 2 in dry air, in humid air, and in air with potentially interfering gases added. In addition, 2 days of comparison using diluted ambient air were conducted. Six of the seven techniques compared well, with good linear response and no serious interferences but with a range of calibration differences of about 50%.

“…A modified, commercial, UV pulsed-fluorescence instrument (Thermo Environmental Instruments Inc. (TEI), Model 43S) was used to measure SO2. In a recent intercomparison the Model 43S instrument has been shown [Luke, 1997] to provide linear measurements of SO2 to levels below 0.1 ppbv for long integration periods, and to agree within 13% with other SO2 measurement techniques [Stecher et al, 1997].…”

“…The dissolved ions in the stripping solution were quantified by ion chromatography. The mist chamber/ion chromatography (MCflC) method has been continually developed and improved over the past 10 years and has proven in various intercomparison studies to be very effective at sampling gaseous HNO3, HCOOH, CH3COOH, and SO2 [Keene et al, 1989;Talbot et al, 1990;Stecher et al, 1997].…”

“…The field site is situated about 800 m south of the Delaware Bay, 3 km west of the Atlantic Ocean, and is adjacent (<50 m) to a large salt marsh on the west. This site is the location of a previous campaign to study gas-phase sulfur (S) emissions and to perform a sulfur dioxide intercomparison experiment Stecher et al 1997). The site is occasionally impacted by sulfur dioxide emissions from a coal-fired power plant 23 km to the south-southwest.…”
