Results From Latarjet Surgery for Treating Traumatic Anterior Shoulder Instability Associated With Bone Erosion in the Glenoid Cavity, After Minimum Follow-Up of One Year

Abstract: Objective: Evaluate the results from the Latarjet procedure in patients with anterior recurrent dislocation of the shoulder who present bone loss of the glenoid cavity greater than 25%. Methods: Twenty six male patients underwent the Latarjet procedure, The bone loss was evaluated by means of radiography using the Bernageau view and by means of CAT scan. The patients were evaluated with regard to range of motion, using the Rowe and UCLA scales, before and after the operation, and by radiographs to assess the p… Show more

“…Despite presenting statistical significance, the decrease in mobility was very slight. Ikemoto et al 18 evaluated 26 patients with a mean length of follow-up of 38 months and also observed that there was limitation of mobility in the operated shoulder in all planes, but more markedly so in relation to movements of lateral rotation. Godinho and Monteiro 11 had a larger number of patients with loss of medial rotation (13 out of 40), while lateral rotation was limited in only 11 patients, with a mean of 14.1°.…”

“… 1 2 3 4 Even with some modifications from surgeon to surgeon, the main principle of the surgery remains the coracoid transfer through the subscapularis tendon. 1 5 6 7 It has become the treatment of choice in the settings of osseous deficiencies > 20% of the glenoid surface area, of revision surgery, and of athletes who practice high-risk contact sports, even in the setting of limited osseous deficiency. 8 For the achievement of the best result and less complications, it is mandatory to position the graft properly with the goal of healing between the coracoid process and the glenoid in a flush position.…”

“…Muscle strength after anterior glenohumeral instability treatment was determined in 4 studies 16 20 22 24 (33%). Three papers (25%) used a quantitative measurement of muscle strength aided by a dynamometer and reported the position of the patient (orthostatic or neutral).…”
