Results and complications of the Baha system (bone-anchored hearing aid)

Abstract: The aim of this work is to reexamine our experience with the treatment of conductive and mixed hearing loss using the Baha system. The system was implanted in 47 patients (16 adults and 31 children under the age of 14), bilaterally in two cases. The causes of hypoacusis were bilateral congenital aural atresia (31 patients), bilateral chronic otitis media or outcomes of middle-ear surgery (Gillett et al. in J laryngol Otol 120:537-542, 2006), and otosclerosis (Pazzaglia et al. in Acta Orthop Scand 54:574-579, 1… Show more

“…In the literature, many studies show that there is a significant benefit to the quality of life with BAHA surgical intervention, as measured using the Glasgow Benefit Inventory [10][11][12][13] . Arunachalam et al [10] reported that BAHA produces a greater improvement in quality of life than middle ear surgery for discharging ears.…”

“…Studies have shown that patients with percutaneous bone conduction implant systems and conductive or mixed hearing loss experience a significant improvement in hearing and speech identification scores, with air-bone gap closure in 80-85 % of patients [8,9]. Subjectively, patients with a percutaneous system tend to note satisfaction with the device [8,9].…”

“…Subjectively, patients with a percutaneous system tend to note satisfaction with the device [8,9]. McNeil and colleagues investigated the subjective outlook of these osseointegrated implants on the recipient's spouse or partner by having them fill out the Hearing Handicap Inventory for Adults Screening (HHIA-S) questionnaire [10].…”
