Restriction fragment length polymorphism of the periplasmic flagellar flaA1 gene of Serpulina species

Abstract: Forty-one reference and field isolates of intestinal spirochetes representing Serpulina hyodysenteriae, Serpulina innocens, Serpulina pilosicoli, Brachyspira aalborgi, and nonclassified weakly beta-hemolytic intestinal spirochetes were compared by restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) of the periplasmic flagellar (PF) flaA1 gene. Six genetically distinct groups (I through VI), each with a unique RFLP fingerprint pattern, were identified by Southern blotting analysis of EcoRV chromosomal DNA digests w… Show more

“…The structural, biochemical and genotypic characteristics of B. pilosicoli isolated from animals are similar to those of B. pilosicoli isolated from humans (Lee and Hampson, 1994;Duhamel et al, 1995b;Trott et al, 1996dFisher et al, 1997;Muniappa et al, 1998). Transmission across species has been shown in pigs, chicks and laboratory mice inoculated with B. pilosicoli strains from humans, monkeys, pigs, dogs and birds (Dwars et al, 1992;Muniappa et al, 1996Muniappa et al, , 1998Trott et al, 1996c;Sacco et al, 1997;.…”

In addition, multilocus enzyme electrophoresis (MLEE) has been used to examine the population structure and diversity of B. hyodysenteriae (Lee et al, 1993;Trott et al, 1997).…”
