Restoration of Brain Antioxidant Status by Hydroalcoholic Extract of Mimusops elengi Flowers in Rats Treated With Monosodium Glutamate

Abstract: Monosodium glutamate (MSG) is commonly used as a flavor enhancer in many countries. However, overconsumption of MSG has been reported to produce detrimental effects on several organs. It mainly affects the normal physiology and function of the brain and causes severe oxidative stress. Mimusops elengi Linn. traditionally is used in many countries as a brain tonic and to calm anxiety and panic attacks. The effect of standardized hydroalcoholic extract of M. elengi flowers (ME) was evaluated against MSG-induced o… Show more

“…The brain because of its very little antioxidant defence mechanisms and being rich of polyunsaturated fatty acids, a principal target for lipid peroxidation (LPO) is particularly sensitive to oxidative damage (Christen, ; Shivasharan et al , ). Recent studies have confirmed the complete or partial beneficial effects of treatment with synthetic or natural source derived antioxidants and antiinflammatory agents in various CNS pathology including LPS‐induced oxidative stress and inflammation in animals (Sah et al , ; Wang et al , ; Nagakannan et al , ; Nagakannan et al , ; Soncini et al , ).…”

“…Additionally, overdoses can also damage organs. MSG specifically impairs the brain’s physical functions and causes oxidative damage ( 8 ). Furthermore, excess MSG may cause sudden neuron death ( 9 ).…”

“…Group I was the Negative control group, while rats in Group II were injected with Glu (2 g/kg, i.p.) once daily for seven consecutive days ( 1 ). Group III was referred to as the VitE/Glu Group in which rats were injected with Vit E (50 mg/kg, i.p.)…”

“…Glutamate (Glu) is the primary excitatory neurotransmitter in the brain which contributes to many physiological processes, including learning and memory ( 1 ). Pathological overstimulation of glutamatergic receptors produces an excessive influx of Ca +2 and Na + , leading to glutamate-induced neuronal apoptosis and eliciting a marked excitotoxicity ( 2 ).…”
