Aim:To investigate the prevalence of snoring, excessive daytime sleepiness and other sleep symptoms in a group of professional wrestlers and to identify the risk factors of snoring in these subjects.Methods: A questionnaire was administered to 55 professional wrestlers and 44 age matched men. All subjects answered nine questions about their sleep and snoring habits and self-graded on a scale of 0 to 4. The questions were also related to demographic characteristics, Epworth sleepiness scale (ESS) and general medical history.Results: There were no significant differences in age, smoking and alcohol intake between wrestlers and control subjects. Obesity (p=0.004) was significantly more common and neck circumference (p=0.004) significantly higher in wrestlers than in control subjects. Bed time were significantly early (p=0.006), wake time significantly late (p=0.014), total sleep time significantly higher (p<0.001) in wrestlers when compared to control subjects. Habitual snoring rated was reported by 9.1% of wrestlers and by 6.8% of control subjects (p>0.05). The prevalence of excessive daytime sleepiness, witnessed apnea, morning headache, restless leg, insomnia, sleep talking, sleep walking and mean ESS were not significantly different in wrestlers when compared to control subjects.Conclusion: There were no significant differences with respect to habitual snoring, daytime sleepiness and ESS between wrestlers and control subjects. However, obesity and large neck circumference were much more common among wrestlers.

OBJECTIVE: The pathophysiology of migraine and restless legs syndrome (RLS) seems to involve inherited mechanism and dysfunction of the dopaminergic system. Previous articles have shown that the frequency of RLS is higher in migraine patients than in controls. We conducted a study to evaluate comorbidities, medication used and depressive symptoms that can explain the relation between migraine and RLS. METHODS: A case-control study was performed in which patients with migraine (n=72) and a control group without migraine (n=72) were interviewed. Data including RLS diagnosis, depressive symptoms, comorbidities and drugs used were evaluated. RESULTS: There was a significant association between migraine and RLS (p=0.01), but comorbidities such as diabetes, hypertension, anemia and drugs used did not explain this association. Depression scores, as measured by the Beck Depression Inventory, were higher in migraine patients with RLS (p =0.04). CONCLUSION: No specific factors explaining the association between migraine and RLS were found. Symptoms of depression were more frequent in patients with migraine and RLS.

A B S T R A C TObjective: To investigate cardiovascular autonomic function in patients with restless leg syndrome (RLS) by means of cardiovascular reflexes and heart rate variability (HRV) during wakefulness. Methods: Twelve RLS patients and 14 controls underwent cardiovascular function tests including headup tilt test (HUTT), Valsalva maneuver, deep breathing, hand grip, and cold face. HRV analysis was performed in the frequency domain using both autoregressive (AR) and fast Fourier transform algorithms in rest supine condition and during HUTT.Results: There was a significant increase in systolic blood pressure values in supine rest condition and a trend toward a lower Valsalva ratio in RLS patients with respect to controls. The significant and physiological changes of HRV at HUTT detected in healthy subjects were not found in RLS patients. Conclusion: RLS patients exhibit a tendency toward hypertension, reduced amplitude of both sympathetic and parasympathetic responses at HUTT, as well as blunted parasympathetic drive to blood pressure changes. These findings, if confirmed by more controlled studies, might support the hypothesis of autonomic nervous system involvement during wakefulness and consequently an enhanced cardiovascular risk in RLS.
