Pretreatment of seeds results in faster emergence of seedlings and uniform stand, especially under stress. Thus, the objective was to evaluate the action of plant regulators as stress attenuators during germination and initial development of pumpkin seedlings, cv. 'Baiana Tropical', irrigated with saline water. For this, a completely randomized design was established, in a 4 x 3 factorial scheme, with four replications. Treatments consisted of four types of water (W 1 -100% supply water; W 2 -100% fi sh farming effl uent; W 3 -100% artesian well water; W 4 -mixture of 50% fi sh farming effl uent + 50% artesian well water) and three seed treatments (control, salicylic acid and gibberellic acid). The variables measured were germination, first germination count, shoot and root length, shoot and root dry mass, total soluble sugars, total amino acids and proline. The data were subjected to analysis of variance and Scott-Knott test. Pumpkin seedlings performed osmotic adjustment under saline conditions of W 4 water. In addition, the treatment of pumpkin seeds with plant regulators (gibberellic and salicylic acids) favors the germination and initial development of seedlings under conditions of salt stress.

Disruption of ecosystem services associated with climate change may affect human well-being in different ways. Medicinal plants provide extremely relevant ecosystem services. Here, we tested the hypothesis that highly suitable habitats (i.e., suitability ≥ 0.8) for medicinal plants in Caatinga dry forest may be potentially contracted under scenarios of climate change, which are represented by different levels of increases in greenhouse gas emissions. We performed species distribution modelling to simulate the effects of climate change on the range of suitable habitats for medicinal plants native to the Caatinga dry forest. We selected the 10 most important plant species based on their high local importance as medicinal resources. We documented that climate change may distinctly affect areas of suitable habitats for medicinal plants in the Caatinga dry forest. Independent of the future climatic scenario projected to 2090, 70% of the studied species will likely experience reductions in their areas of highly suitable habitats and 30% will likely experience increases. Specifically, suitable habitats will likely be reduced for (1) Amburana cearensis, (2) Anadenanthera colubrina, (3) Bauhinia cheilantha, (4) Myracrodruon urundeuva, (5) Neocalyptrocalyx longifolium, (6) Operculina hamiltonii, (7) O. macrocarpa; and will likely be increased for (1) Cereus jamacaru, (2) Erythrina velutina, (3) Maytenus rigida. We also documented a reduction in medicinal plant species richness and composition in all three future climatic scenarios analyzed. We alert that potential future contractions of highly suitable habitats for the most important medicinal plants may compromise ecosystem functions and the provisioning of relevant natural medicines, mainly to low-income communities, which are abundant in the Caatinga dry forest.

Physiological quality of green corn seeds under water stress conditions

This study aimed to evaluate the physiological quality of green corn seeds subjected to water stress. The experimental design used was completely randomized, in a 2 x 5 factorial arrangement, consisting of two corn hybrids (AG1051 and BRS3046) and five osmotic potentials (0; -0.4; -0.8; -1.2 and – 1.6 MPa) simulated with aqueous solutions of polyethylene glycol 6000 (PEG 6000), with four replications of 50 seeds per treatment, totaling 40 experimental units. The analyzed variables were: water content, germination, root protrusion, final root protrusion, germination speed index, root length and coleoptile length. There was a significant effect of the interaction between hybrid factors and osmotic potentials for all analyzed variables, except for final root protrusion, which showed an isolated effect for the two factors studied. The results obtained indicated a higher percentage of germination and initial development of green corn seedlings for green corn seeds, hybrids AG1051 and BRS3046 at the osmotic potential of 0.0 MPa. The germination and vigor of green corn seeds decrease under water stress conditions from the osmotic potential of -0.4 MPa induced by PEG 6000, inhibiting the development of normal seedlings, affecting seed viability. Hybrid AG1051 presents superior germination and vigor compared to BRS3046.
