Stroke is a cerebral artery disease that negatively affects activities of daily living (ADLs) and quality of life (QoL). Smartphones have demonstrated strong potential in assessing balance performance. However, such smartphone-based tools have thus far not been applied to stroke survivors. The purpose of this study was to develop a smartphone-based balance assessment system for subjects who have experienced strokes and evaluate the system feasibility. The smartphone-based balance assessment application was developed with Android Studio, and reliability and validity tests were conducted. The smartphone was used to record data using a built-in accelerometer and gyroscope, and increased changes represented greater instability. Six postures were tested for 30 s each. Ten healthy adults were recruited in the reliability test, and the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) was used to analyze the within-day and between-day reliabilities. Eight subjects with chronic stroke and eight healthy adults were recruited for the validity test, in which balance performance was compared to represent the application validity. The ICC values of the reliability tests were at least 0.76 (p = 0.00). The acceleration data exhibited no difference between individuals who have experienced stroke and healthy subjects; however, all six postures were found to differ significantly between the two groups in the gyroscope data. The study demonstrates that the smartphone application provides a convenient, reliable, and valid tool for the balance assessments of subjects who have experienced chronic stroke.

Introducción La fisioterapia como área de estudio del movimiento corporal humano, se ha enfatizado en ofrecer herramientas de recuperación a pacientes con diversos tipos de patología a nivel osteomuscular, cardiovascular y neuromuscular. Los procesos de evaluación en fisioterapia son importantes para la identificación de alteraciones estructurales y funcionales en el movimiento corporal humano, en la actualidad existen diversos instrumentos de evaluación con altos niveles de confiabilidad que permiten identificar alteraciones funcionales en los pacientes. Objetivo realizar una revisión de la literatura sobre pruebas clínicas utilizadas para la evaluación del movimiento corporal humano en población adulta y pediátrica en la práctica clínica categorizada por las categorías de la APTA. Método revisión sistemática de la literatura donde se tuvieron en cuenta estudios contemplados del año 2000 al 2016, literatura que contemplara los siguientes términos DeCS: Evaluation, Physical Therapy, pediatrics, adult. Resultados se pudo identificar que entre población adulta y pediátrica existen diferencias en las escalas de medición utilizadas para la evaluación del movimiento corporal humano, las escalas pueden ser categorizadas a través de las categorías de la APTA como características antropométricas, capacidad aeróbica y resistencia, integridad integumentaria, dolor, conciencia atención y cognición, integridad refleja, función motora, desarrollo neuromotor e integridad sensorial, rango de movimiento y flexibilidad, desempeño muscular, marcha y locomoción, balance, autocuidado y manejo en el hogar. Conclusión se pudieron identificar pruebas clínicas con altos niveles de validez y confiabilidad que permiten determinar alteraciones del movimiento corporal humano en adultos y niños, estas pruebas pueden ser categorizadas a través de las categorías de la APTA.

Objective: Participation restrictions are serious problems that stroke survivors experience while reintegrating into family, work, community, and social situations after participating in rehabilitation programs. The purpose of this study was to explore the factors affecting participation in activities of daily living (ADL), as well as social and leisure activities of individuals with hemiparetic stroke. Design: Cross-sectional study. Methods: The study involved 96 participants who were diagnosed with a first stroke 6 months before the study (58 men, 38 women; 60.3±14.3 years). The Berg Balance Scale, Modified Barthel Index, Manual Function test, and Activity Card Sort were used to assess static and dynamic balance function, upper limb function, level of independence, and their level of participation within the community. A regression analysis was used to identify the influence of factors affecting participation in ADL, social and recreational activities. Results: The Activity Card Sort scores were significantly affected by the Manual Function test and Modified Barthel Index scores (p<0.05). Participation in leisure activities was affected by the level of independence. Participation in social activities was affected by the balance function and level of independence of the participants. Conclusions:The results of this study have shown that participation restrictions are affected by upper limb function, balance function, and the level of independence in individuals with hemiparetic stroke.
