Responsibility for Regional Waste Generation: A Single-Region Extended Input–Output Analysis for Wales

Abstract: Abstract. This paper uses a regional input-output framework and data derived on waste generation by industry to examine different aspects of regional waste accountability. In addition to estimating a series of industry output-waste coefficients, the paper considers a series of methods for waste attribution from production and consumption perspectives. In particular, it considers a method that permits a greater focus on regional (private and public) final consumption as the main exogenous driver of waste genera… Show more

“…This model allows to expand EEIOA in relation to the interdependence between goods and waste disposal. Several studies applied the WIOA model to measure the direct and indirect waste of consumption at national level, such as Taiwan, France, and UK (Jensen et al 2013;Liao et al 2015;Beylot et al 2016b;Salemdeeb et al 2016). In a study at sub-national scale, Tsukui et al (2011Tsukui et al ( , 2017 developed an interregional WIOA to quantify the embodied waste generated by consumption patterns in the city of Tokyo.…”

“…Although similar in motivation to both Jensen et al (2012) and the WIO model, this chapter uses the commodity by industry framework and analyzes the current state of the U.S. hazardous waste economy. This research provides information that not only allows decisionmakers to choose between policies or programs aimed at reducing hazardous waste generation from the production or consumption sides of the economy, but also provides information on each perspective once this decision is made.…”
