Response of upland rice to phosphorus in an Ultisol in the humid forest zone of West Africa

Abstract: Phosphorus (P) deficiency is one of the major limiting factor for crop production in highly weathered soils in the humid tropics. Field experiments were conducted for two years (1992 and 1993) to determine P response and efficiencies of upland rice cultivars in an Ultisol, low in available P, in the forest zone of Cote d'Ivoire. The rice cultivars tested were selected from a large number of entries tested earlier for acidity tolerance.Grain yields of the cultivars were significantly increased by P application.… Show more

“…Chemical fertilizer was applied at a rate of 100 kg N ha −1 , 100 kg P ha −1 , and 100 kg K ha −1 in the form of a compound fertilizer split twice; first as a basal application at 14 DAT, and then as a top dressing at 50 DAT. This fertilizer application rate was determined to be appropriate for this study based on the results of field studies examining the growth of upland rice in response to nitrogen (Jones et al, 1997), phosphorus (Sahrawat et al, 1995), and potassium (Fageria et al, 1990). Preventive measures were taken to preclude damage from disease and insects.…”

“…La riziculture pluviale en Afrique de l'Ouest souffre de l'acidite´des sols en de´pit des travaux re´alise´s sur la fertilisation en P (Sahrawat et al 1995 ;Somado et al 2003). Ainsi, les rendements de´passent rarement 1,5 t ha…”

“…The model results in 7 over 8 treatments were not significantly different from the observed yield of NERICA. The P stress has been simulated adequately to allow the expression of nitrogen stress among the treatments with application and without application of P. By simulating adequately the processes in P deficient soils, the model agrees with the results of Sahrawat et al (1995) suggesting that P fertilization of acid-tolerant upland rice can significantly improve its productivity under Ultisols. Before the calibration and over all five sites, grain yield and total aboveground plant biomass had a RMSE of more than 30% (Table 6).…”
