“…There are various theoretical grounds for using exogenous CT in patients with uremic osteodystrophy on dialysis: CT is effective in other high turnover osteopathies (Paget's disease) [3,9]: furthermore, in renal bone disease it may play a protective role [4,5], The results we have so far documented in uremic patients on dialysis with clinical and morphological signs of osteodystrophy, are worthy of note. In nearly all cases, clinical signs of bone disease may reduce or disappear during CT treatment, while associated biochemical changes are not so significant.…”

“…In our cases we had a good improve ment in clinical and biochemical features by 150-200 MRC units (SCT) daily. As Rose et al (13) remarked, 50 MCR units three times a week may be the minimum for long-term treat ment. How long therapy with calcitonin should be continued is not known at this time.…”

“…Porcine and salmon calcitonins are commer cially available, and they have an established role in the treatment of Paget's disease of bone {De Rose et al, 1974), but they are potential antigens. If a patient has a history of allergy, an intradermal test using a 1:100 dilution should be carried out before the full dose is admin istered.…”
