Response of growth and forage yield of pearl millet (Pennisetum galucum) to nitrogen fertilization rates and cutting height

Abstract: Two field experiments were conducted in the experimental station farm, faculty of agriculture, Ain Shams University at Shalakan, Kalubia Governorate, during the two growing seasons, i.e. 2009 and 2010, to investigate the response of growth and forage yield production of pearl millet cv. Shandaweel 1 to nitrogen fertilization rates and cutting height above the soil surface. Four nitrogen rates as ammonium nitrate (33.5%N), 0, 30, 45, and 60 kg N/fed, were arranged in the main plots and two levels of cutting hei… Show more

“…Khogali et al, (2011) observed increasing trend of GFY with N fertilization in fodder oats. Similar results were observed by some other researchers in maize (Paschalidis X et al, 2015 andSharma et al, 2016), oats (Kumari et al, 2014), pearl millet (Shahin et al,2013 andAyub et al, 2007) and napierbajra hybrid (Tiwanaet al, 2004). The yield of an agricultural crop strongly dependent on the supply of mineral nutrients, particularly N (Sawan, 2006).…”

“…An increase in plant height with N fertilization was observed in maize (PaschalidisX et al,2015 andSharma et al, 2016), oats (Dawit and Wegi 2014) and rice (Mizanet al,2010). Several other researchers also found positive relation of N fertilization with plant height (Dubey et al2013, Shahin et al,2013, Oadet al,2004and Gasim, 2001 (Amin and Hasan, 2011). An increased leaf area index with N fertilization was observed in oats varieties (Dubey et al,2013) and in chickpea (Namvaret al,2011).…”

“…Similar results were reported by Lakum et al, (2011), Bana et al, (2012), and Patel et al, (2016. The increased nitrogen availability, accompanied with the application of the nitrogen fixing bio-fertilizer, will push the growth of pearl millet and the increments in internode length and/or number of internodes, resulting in significantly taller plants (Shahin et al, 2013). Similar trend was reported by Ayub et al (2009), El-Sarag andAbu Hashem (2009) and Pathan et al (2010).…”

“…Similar to the fresh yield, Shahin et al (2013) reported an increase in the dry yield of three successive cuts of pearl millet with increasing nitrogen fertilization up to 75 kg N fed -1 . They attributed this result to the increase in photosynthetic products driven by the better leaf area, leaf weight and stem length resulting from the high N fertilization rates.…”
