Response of Cherry Rootstocks to Boron and Salinity

Abstract: The objective of the present research was to study the effects of boron (B) and potassium chloride (KCl) induced salinity on growth, nutritional status, and chlorophyll content of the cherry rootstocks CAB 6P (Prunus cerasus L.) and Gisela 5 (Prunus cerasus L. × Prunus canescens L.). Plants produced the longest shoots, more leaves, and the greatest fresh weights of shoots and leaves when treated with 0.025 mM B combined with the lower level of salinity (0.75 dS m −1 ). CAB 6P plants retained most of their leav… Show more

“…Nesom & Pruski, had reduced SPAD readings at elevated salinity stress (Niu et al, 2007). Increasing salinity stress was also shown to decrease leaf SPAD readings in two cherry (Prunus cerasus L.) rootstocks (Sotiropoulos et al, 2006). In a study by , leaf SPAD readings decreased as salinity level increased from 1.6 to 6.0 dS • m -1 .…”

“…This is in agreement with our previous study in which leaf SPAD readings were reduced by elevated salinity of irrigation water in some of the herbaceous species (Niu et al, 2007). Although no relationships between chlorophyll concentrations and SPAD readings for these rose species have been previously established, measuring leaf SPAD readings have been shown to be an efficient method to rapidly and nondestructively quantify the initial or mild salt damage in tomato (Montesano and van Iersel, 2007) and cherry rootstocks (Sotiropoulos et al, 2006).…”
