Response inhibition deficits are positively associated with trait rumination, but attentional inhibition deficits are not: aggressive behaviors and interpersonal stressors as mediators

Abstract: Previous findings on relationships between inhibition that is a core executive function, and trait rumination have been inconsistent. This inconsistency could be overcome by investigating the association between rumination and the two subcomponents of inhibition: response inhibition and attentional inhibition. This study examined whether and how response inhibition and attentional inhibition were related to rumination as well as worry. University students in Japan (N = 213) conducted the Go/No-Go Task and the … Show more

“…To our knowledge, there has been no attempt in Japan to assess negative dependent events and negative independent events separately. For example, Hasegawa et al ( 2022a ) examined whether response inhibition deficits increased rumination through the generation of negative interpersonal events in Japanese university students. However, they did not use negative interpersonal dependent event items selected in the stressors scale in their analyses because the interpersonal events subscale they used consisted of only 15 items.…”

“…Meanwhile, cognitive inhibition de cits are associated with rumination (Hasegawa et al, 2022;Hasegawa, Somatori, Nishimura, Hattori, & Kunisato, 2021). The association of trait rumination and inhibition is further supported by a meta-analysis indicating signi cant negative associations between rumination and inhibition (Yang, Cao, Shields, Teng, & Liu, 2017).…”

“…Same as other addictive drugs [ 283 ], alcohol may have disinhibiting effects on behavior as it induces a premature response based on preliminary stimulus evaluation in the “go/no go” verbal recognition task, reflecting its impulsive and psychomotor stimulant nature [ 284 ]. Such deficits in behavioral response inhibition have also previously been correlated with aggressive behaviors [ 285 , 286 ]. Alcohol was also shown to impair attentional inhibition, that is, the ability to ignore distracting environmental stimuli in order to focus on relevant information [ 287 ].…”
