Response inhibition and interference control in patients with bipolar I disorder and first‐degree relatives

Abstract: Overall, impairment in RI and IC (only on S-error score) was present in both patients and relatives. The persistence of these deficits in the absence of mood symptoms suggests that these features may represent candidate endophenotypes for bipolar disorder.

“…Finally, EBP exhibited widespread deficits across the six neurocognitive domains according to the version of MCCB adapted to the ISBD recommendations. Alongside this, other studies that have used both the MCCB battery and other neurocognitive batteries showed that EBP present a neurocognitive deficit that affects multiple neurocognitive domains. It is noteworthy that Burdick et al used the standard MCCB and found differences between EBP and controls in all neurocognitive domains except for problem solving.…”

“…A major field of research in addictive disorders endeavours to identify distinctive neurobehavioral endophenotypes that predispose individuals to compulsive drug use. Evidences coming from other fields suggests that response inhibition and inhibitory control might be heritable [ 45 47 ]. In smoking behaviours, recent data suggest that cognitive deficits in inhibitory control are present before starting the use of tobacco.…”

“…Bipolar disorder (BD) is associated with neurocognitive impairment which persists in remission phase of the illness [1,2]. Meta-analytical studies in remitted BD found deficits with medium to large effect sizes (Cohen d = 0.5–0.8) in a number of cognitive domains, including executive functions, processing speed, sustained attention and verbal memory [1,3].…”
