Al Jam’iyatul Washliyah is an organization established by the ulama in 1930. This organization has garnered significant attention from Muslims due to the presence of ulama within its ranks. However, over time, the organization has faced challenges related to a scarcity of ulama. This study aims to investigate the factors contributing to the scarcity of ulama within Al Washliyah and highlight the importance of revitalizing the ulama for the organization. Employing a literature review with a historical approach, this study reveals two key findings. First, the scarcity of ulama can be attributed to a decline in public interest in acquiring in-depth religious knowledge and the secular nature of the political system. Second, Al Washliyah has not been adequately proactive in cultivating new ulama, thereby failing to uphold the tradition established by the organization’s founders. This study complements the literature on the contemporary development of ulama studies in Indonesia. Abstrak: Al Jam’iyatul Washliyah merupakan organisasi binaan para ulama pada tahun 1930. Organisasi ini mendapat perhatian yang besar dari kaum muslimin karena keberadaan ulama di dalamnya. Seiring perjalanan waktu, organisasi mengalami persoalan pada kelangkaan ulama. Studi ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui faktor kelangkaan ulama di Al Washliyah, dan bagaimana urgensi revitalisasi ulama bagi organisasi ini. Studi ini merupakan penelitian kepustakaan dengan pendekatan historis. Studi ini mendapat temuan: Pertama, kelangkaan ulama adalah faktor menurunnya minat masyarakat terhadap penguasaan ilmu agama secara mendalam, dan faktor sekularisme sistem politik. Kedua, Al Washliyah belum optimal untuk mengupayakan kelahiran ulama sebagai upaya menjaga tradisi keulamaan yang dibangun pendiri organisasi.

Abstract: This article attempts to explore the role of Al Washliyah University in the trajectory of modern Indonesian history, especially regarding the Islamic style they developed, the Islamic scientific authority built by both scholars and their teachings. In addition, this article examines the strategic position of the university in the 1950s socio-political setting in North Sumatra. This study is a historical study with a political sociology approach by prioritizing archival records, published historical sources, and making greater use of a wide range of oral material in the form of interviews. The results of this study indicate that UNIVA has bridged and developed the two main streams of public debate since the independence era and even now, namely regarding Islam and nationality. The thoughts of the founders have strengthened the integration between Islam and nationality in a formula to build a nation and a generation. Then, this affirmation is seen as important as the main argument in this article which allows the opening of a dialogue about how the Islamic scientific tradition that was built and developed by UNIVA scholars as a foundation for Islamic educators, actors of Islamic universities in promoting democratization and nationality, creating social cohesion. Abstrak: Artikel ini mengkaji kedudukan perempuan di lembaga pendidikan Al Jam’iyatul Washliyah di Sumatera Utara. Organisasi Al Washliyah merupakan organisasi Islam tradisional yang menganut mazhab Ahlussunnahwaljamaah dalam bidang akidah dan Syâfi‘iyah dalam bidang fikih. Afiliasi organisasi ini dalam kedua mazhab tersebut disinyalir akan tidak memberikan kedudukan yang setara antara perempuan dengan laki-laki. Artikel ini merupakan hasil penelitian kualitatif dimana data penelitian diperoleh dari kegiatan telaah dokumen dan observasi. Kajian ini mengajukan temuan bahwa lembaga pendidikan Al Washliyah yang dikelola oleh Majelis Pendidikan Al Washliyah ternyata belum memberikan porsi signifikan bagi kaum perempuan dalam struktur organisasinya. Tidak pernah ditemukan perempuan menjadi ketua atau sekretaris majelis, kecuali sebagai bendahara. Tetapi, kaum perempuan telah dilibatkan sebagai manajer di lembaga pendidikan Al Washliyah. Sebab, beberapa jabatan pimpinan madrasah, sekolah, dan perguruan tinggi Al Washliyah dipegang oleh kaum perempuan. Tenaga pendidik di lembaga pendidikan Al Washliyah telah banyak diisi oleh kaum perempuan. Sebagian guru dan dosen perempuan Al Washliyah telah memiliki ijazah master. Memang, beberapa dari mereka dipercayakan sebagai manajer dengan tanggung jawab yang besar. Abstract: Women in Al Jam’iyatul Washliyah Educational Institution. This article examines women’s position in Al Jam’iyatul Washliyah educational institutions in North Sumatra. Al Washliyah organization is a traditional Islamic organization that practices the Ahl al-Sunnah wa al-Jamâ‘ah theology and Shâfi‘i school of law. It has been alledged that these school of theology and law would not allow equal opportunity for man and woman. Nevertheless, this study—which mainly based on document review and observation—found that that was not exactly the case. While it is true that in Al Washliyah Education Council women are under respresented, the condition is much better in educational institutions. In Al Washliyah educational institutions, it is common to find female teachers and lecturers with master degrees. Indeed, some of them are entrusted as managers with substantial responsibilities.
