Respiratory Protection

Abstract: Respiratory protection is used as a method of protecting individuals from inhaling harmful airborne contaminants and in some cases to supply them with breathable air in oxygen-deficient environments. This article focuses on the use and types of personal respiratory protection (respirators) worn by individuals at workplaces where airborne hazardous contaminants may exist. Respirators are increasingly also being used in nonindustrial settings such as health care facilities, as concerns regarding infectious epide… Show more

“…Respirators have been in use since the time of the Romans whereby a wet cloth was used in lead mines to prevent inhalation of toxic chemicals [ 26 ]. In 1877, one of the first respirators ( Figure 2 ) was developed for fires called the “Nearly” smoke mask [ 26 ].…”

“…Filtration technologies are also extensively used for the capture and concentration of waterborne viral pathogens (Gibson 2014) from drinking, environmental, recreational or waste water samples (Cashdollar and Wymer 2013;Ikner et al 2012). In addition, particulate air filters are used in personal respiratory protective equipment (i.e., face masks and respirators) Cohen and Birkner 2012;Rengasamy et al 2004) to ensure shortrange protection of wearers against airborne pathogens-which include a number of viruses (Tang et al 2006)-and in air purifiers/cleaners to limit longrange aerosol transmission of infection in healthcare settings (Hyttinen et al 2011;Tang et al 2006).…”
