Rupture of the hydatid cyst in man brings about mild to severe toxic reactions including death. The present study was undertaken to investigate some of the responses resulting from administration of the ovine hydatid fluid to the sheep, which, like man, is an interme diate host of the Echinococcus granulosus. In 50 sodium pentobarbital-anesthetized sheep, the arterial blood pressure (A.B.P.), •central venous pressure (C.V.P.), respiration and electrocardiogram were recorded. Intravenous administration of 5-10 ml hydatid fluid brought about moderate to severe fall in A.B.P. and rapid respiration with or without transient apnea or permanent respira tory cessation in 80 percent of the animals. Fifty percent of the sheep died of circulatory and respiratory failure after the first injection of the hydatid fluid. Boiled hydatid fluid did not lose its potency to evoke the above responses. Pretreatment of the animals with atropine sulfate, 0,5 mg/kg subcutaneously, did not block the reactions. Administration of the antihistamine chlorpheniramine, 4 mg/kg intravenously, caused partial prevention of the reactions in 6 out of 10 responsive sheep. The cardiovascular and respiratory responses to ovine hydatid fluid may be due to antigen-antibody reactions or some toxic component of the fluid. Résumé. Δεδομένου ότι η ανοσολογική μνήμη μπορεί να παραμένει δια βίου, ακόμη και όταν δεν ανιχνεύονται αντισώματα στο ορό του ασθενούς, μελετήσαμε τη διέγερση λεμφοκυττάρων ατόμων, τα οποία έπασχαν ή είχαν νοσήσει από εχινόκοκκο μετά επώαση με υγρό υδάτιδος κύστεως. Η μεγαλύτερη λεμφοκυτταρική διέγερση παρατηρήθηκε την έκτη μέρα, με συγκέντρωση πρωτεΐνης υδατίδος κύστεως 15 mg/ml καλλιεργητικού υλικού. Ο δείκτης διεγερσιμότητας (ΔΔ) των λεμφοκυττάρων δέκα ατόμων με υδατίδα κύστη ή ιστορικό εχινοκοκκιάσεως ήταν 4,3 ± 1,6 (μέση τιμή ± ΣΑ), με διακύμανση από 7 έως 2,1. Στις καλλιέργειες μαρτύρων, ο Δ.Δ. ήταν 1,1 ± 0,3 (Μέση τιμή ΣΑ) με διακύμανση από 0,5 έως 1,5. Τα αποτελέσματα αποδεικνύουν ότι λεμφοκύτταρα ανοσοποιημένων ατόμων διατηρούν την αντιχονική μνήμη και εμφανίζουν βλαστική μεταμόρφωση in vitro παρουσία αντιγόνου. Η συγκαλλιέργεια σκωληκοκεφαλών Ε. Granulosus και ευαισθητοποιημένων λεμφοκυττάρων έδειξε ότι η ζωτικότητα τόσο των σκωληκοκεφαλών όσο και των ευαισθητοποιημένων λεμφοκυττάρων ήταν σημαντικά μικρότερη από εκείνη συγκαλλιεργειών σκωληκοκεφαλών με μη ευαισθητοποιημένα λεμφοκύτταρα. Σε συγκαλλιέργειες σκωληκοκεφαλών με ευαισθητοποιημένα λεμφοκύτταρα, το ποσοστό των ζωντανών σκωληκοκεφαλών την 5η ημέρα ήταν 5%, ενώ σε συγκαλλιέρχειες με μη ευαισθητοποιημένα λεμφοκύτταρα ήταν 57%. Ανάλογη μεγαλύτερη καταστροφή των λεμφοκυττάρων παρατηρήθηκε σε μικτές καλλιέργειες λεμφοκυττάρων και σκωληκοκεφαλών, όταν τα λεμφοκύτταρα προέρχονταν από άτομα, τα οποία είχαν νοσήσει ή νοσούσαν από εχινόκοκκο. Τα αποτελέσματα της μελέτης αυτής δείχνουν την ύπαρξη κυτταρικής ανοσίας στην εχινοκοκκίαση και υποδηλώνουν τη δυνατότητα αναπτύξεως εμβολίου κατά της εχινοκοκκιάσεως.
