Resource Use and Cost of Alzheimer’s Disease in France: 18-Month Results from the GERAS Observational Study

Abstract: Increasing severity of AD dementia in France is associated with increased use of resources as well as increased total societal and patient costs; informal care was the greatest cost contributor. Clinically meaningful cognitive decline is associated with significantly increased costs.

“…These figures are in line with those obtained for other rare disorders [21]. The number of hours of informal care needed by SMA patients is very similar to the time needed by patients with other low-prevalence diseases, such as Duchenne muscular dystrophy [32], mucopolysaccharidosis [33] or juvenile idiopathic arthritis [34], and by patients with other high-prevalence diseases that cause a severe loss of personal autonomy, such as stroke [35] or Alzheimer's disease [36,37].…”

“…The families of those individuals who are not eligible to receive benefits assume the total extended shadow cost sharing. In addition, our results support the overburden of the informal caregiver when the severity of the disease increases [51,80], such as dementia [81], Alzheimer's disease [82] or cancer [83,84].…”

“…Of publications reporting unit costs or cost sources, fewer were identified for France ( n = 9) [ 30 – 37 ] than for Germany ( n = 15) [ 23 , 38 50 ] or Italy ( n = 15) [ 51 64 ], with one study reporting data for all three countries [ 65 ]. A range of cost sources and unit costs could be obtained from these studies for the resource use items of interest (Table 1 ).…”
