Resource Assessment and Numerical Modeling of CBM Extraction in the Upper Silesian Coal Basin, Poland

Abstract: The paper presents the assessment of the resources of methane considered as the main mineral in the most prospective selected areas of the Upper Silesian Coal Basin, Poland in the region of undeveloped deposits. The methane resources were estimated by means of a volumetric method at three depth levels, 1000, 1250, and 1500 m. A part of the Studzienice deposit comprising three coal seams, 333, 336, and 337, located in a methane zone was chosen for the numerical modeling of simulated methane production. The pres… Show more

“…Production simplicity, commercial feasibility, equipment reliability, and reproducibility constitute essential factors in the development of environmentally friendly and efficient methods of energy generation [1][2][3]. Pulsed processing of process liquids is applied mainly as a method intensifying the hydrodynamic and mass-exchange processes.…”

“…Methane is one of the most dangerous anthropogenic greenhouse gases, and is only second in terms of importance to carbon dioxide [1]. There are many sources of methane including landfills [2], thermally active extractive waste dumping facilities [3], coal mines and coal bed methane extraction facilities [4], and natural gas networks. The natural gas networks are vulnerable to damage resulting in the leaks of this gas into the atmosphere, which primarily contributes to the methane risk to people and the environment, as well as financial losses for the network owner.…”

“…Coalbed methane (CBM) is an integral energy component in coal mining . With an increase in mining depth, stress and pressure in the reservoir gradually increase, which affects the mechanical properties and deformation characteristics of coal, leading to changes in coal permeability.…”
