Resonant magnetic reflection coefficients at the Fe2pedge obtained with linearly and circularly polarized soft x rays

Abstract: A systematic study of the specular reflectivity using circularly and linearly polarized radiation on magnetic materials is presented. Within a frame work based on the complete reflection matrix and the Stokes parameter formalism, the reflectance is modeled as a function of the polarization state of the incoming light for the longitudinal and the transversal magnetization. The nonmagnetic reflection coefficients and their individual magnetic contributions are determined from resonant magnetic reflectivity exper… Show more

“…Figure 1 (c) shows the photon-energy dependence of reflectivity and MCDR. Although the photon-energy dependence of MCDR is different from the circular dichroism obtained from x-ray absorption spectra [17], it is a suited measure of the sample magnetization [19]. We fixed the photon energy to be hν = 714 eV, and the time evolution of the intensities of reflectivity as well as XMCD at this photon energy are traced in order to investigate the electronic and magnetic dynamics of BaFeO 3 thin films.…”

“…We recorded specular reflectivity data for two magnetization directions, R + and R − . The average reflectivity R = (R + + R − )/2 is a measure of the electronic and structural properties, while the magnetic circular dichroism in reflectivity (MCDR) sig-nal DR = (R + − R − )/2 is a measure of the sample magnetization [19]. A Ti-Sapphire laser (λ = 800 nm, hν = 1.55 eV) with the pulse width of ∼ 50 fs was employed as a pump laser with π polarization.…”

“…This clearly shows that the magnetism in graphene is carried by the π-orbitals. The appearance of magnetic signals even far below the π*-resonance is explained by the typical enhancement of magnetic signals in reflection spectroscopy at low reflectance values due to normalization [16]. Exactly this is the case for carbon showing small R G below the π*-resonance [17].…”
