The expression for the SEHR cross-section of symmetrical molecules within the framework of the dipole-quadrupole theory is obtained. It is formed by contributions, which depend on various dipole and quadrupole moments. Estimation of the enhancement coefficients for the quadrupole enhancement mechanism in some limited case can achieve the value 30 10 . It is demonstrated that the contributions follow some selection rules. Qualitative classification of the contributions after the enhancement degree is given.

Surface enhanced hyper Raman scattering (SEHRS) and its applicationsSurface enhanced hyper Raman scattering (SEHRS), spontaneous, two-photon excited, plasmon-enhanced Raman scattering, provides a wealth of vibrational information that can be useful in many directions of spectroscopy. As featured in:See Being regarded as a non-linear analogue of surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS), SEHRS shares most of its properties, but also has additional characteristics. They include complementary spectroscopic information resulting from different selection rules and a stronger enhancement due to the non-linearity in excitation. In practical spectroscopy, this can translate to advantages, which include a high selectivity when probing molecule-surface interactions, the possibility of probing molecules at low concentrations due to the strong enhancement, and the advantages that come with excitation in the near-infrared. In this review, we give examples of the wealth of vibrational spectroscopic information that can be obtained by SEHRS and discuss work that has contributed to understanding the effect and that therefore provides directions for SEHRS spectroscopy. Future applications could range from biophotonics to materials research.

The essential phenomenological characteristics of the nonlinear spontaneous light scattering effect known as hyper‐Raman scattering (HRS) is described in this review. The salient features of the theoretical description of HRS are given within a susceptibility treatment of the induced electrical polarization. Symmetry selection rules and the relation of HRS to Raman scattering are highlighted in this theory section. Experimental considerations for the observation of this higher order Raman effect are considered. Recent applications of this technique to problems of chemical and physical interest are selected to illustrate the utility of this phenomenon. These include HRS studies of crystals, glasses, semiconductors, and liquids. The phenomenon of surface‐enhanced HRS and electronically resonance‐enhanced HRS are also described and illustrated.
