“…For Cs 2+ the absorption profiles are further complicated by the fact that the ground configuration contains two terms and in a laser-produced plasma, absorption from all low-lying states which can be thermally populated is obtained. In the present case the 2 P 3/2 − 2 P 1/2 interval is 1.717 eV (Epstein and Reader 1976) and the cross-sections for absorption from each of these levels was evaluated separately (figure 3) and summed with a weighting appropriate to a particular excitation temperature. This procedure has already been shown to yield good agreement between theory and experiment for 4d → 5p transitions in ionized Sb and Te (D'Arcy et al 1999, Murphy et al 1999).…”

“…However, beam-foil spectroscopy is known to be mono-isotopic, and therefore in-beam reference lines can come only from La spectra. Epstein and Reader [32,33] present lines and relative intensities based on their observations of sliding spark spectra. Although their strongest lines (La IV 5p 6 1 S 0 -5p 5 nl transitions) were recognized in our spectra and served as anchors of the wavelength scale, the relative line intensities in our beam-foil spectra turned out very different from theirs.…”

“…Laboratory observations of the spectra of such rare earth ions have achieved high wavelength resolution and accuracy (e.g., [29][30][31][32][33]). However, with classical light sources such as a sliding spark, the observations have been limited to the recording of time-integrated spectra.…”

“…All the 4 energy levels related to this transition are calculated and given in Table 1, together with the existing experimental results. [27] The main jj coupling components of the ASFs are also given in the table. It can be found that the calculations are in rather good agreement with measurements within just a minor deviation in a fine-structure splitting of about 2%.…”
