Resolving the Predicament of Android Custom Permissions

Abstract: Abstract-Android leverages a set of system permissions to protect platform resources. At the same time, it allows untrusted third-party applications to declare their own custom permissions to regulate access to app components. However, Android treats custom permissions the same way as system permissions even though they are declared by entities of different trust levels. In this work, we describe two new classes of vulnerabilities that arise from the 'predicament' created by mixing system and custom permission… Show more

“…We are aiming to identify disclosed use of permissions and APIs [36] instead of detecting maliciously hidden information flows and service invocations. In this context Tuncay et al [58] found that the coexistence of certain app permissions can lead to unintentional loss of privacy. Our focus also differs from the goal of tools like DroidSafe [22] and ISA [25].…”

“…A considerable portion of these focused on application permissions since they are important with respect to both privacy and security [23], [24], [25]. Custom permissions were also studied [26]. We note that when applications are pre-installed, users do not have a change to grant or deny dangerous application permissions [27] as they normally can do.…”

“…Except system permissions, Android apps also adopts some custom permissions. These permissions allow apps to access some particular apps [6]. Before Android 6.0, when installing an Apk, the android operating system will prompt the user that the permissions of the Apk will need to install and display it in a list.…”
